Blackmagic Desktop Video and Apple M1 Silicon

I've got the new flagship Macbook Air and am trying to get my Thunderbolt Intensity Shuttle to work with it. While the computer sees it (in System Report), I haven't succeeded in getting the Blackmagic software to see it. I installed beta 12.0b1 and, after having to restart to enable system extensions and not seeing the Shuttle, then running the installer again and enabling the extensions, then restarting again, I still don't see the Shuttle. Any ideas?

+1 here, on not working equipment.

-New Macbook Pro 13" M1 / 16GB RAM
-Big Sur 11.1

- Ultrastudio Monitor 3G (firmware 20.4)
-Dektop Video 11.6 / 11.7 / 12.0b1

The OS sees the thunderbolt device, i can confirm that in the systeminformation->thunderbolt tab.
However none of the Desktop Video versions detect the device.
Everything was 'allowed' inside the OS security settings.

For now i cant find any working solutions in the web.

Thanks for the replies. I see we have a few who don't have it working. Has anyone managed to get it to work?

Same as others. I've gone through the security settings and multiple reboots and installs but my UltraStudio Express isn't seen by the software. It does show up in system as a thunderbolt device. But Desktop 12 b1 doesn't see anything.

I have an M1 Mac Mini with an Ultrastudio Mini Recorder connected via an Apple TB3>TB2 adapter.
I have tried Multiple install/uninstall passes with the Desktop Video 12 Beta 1 software driver for the M1 mini. I also have (twice) done a wipe of the boot drive and clean-installed Mac OS Big Sur 11.1 via the internet install method and followed with the same Desktop Video installer. No luck. The end result is the same.

I can see "UltraStudio Mini Recorder" in Mac OS System report under the Thunderbolt section.
However, the Blackmagic Desktop Video control panel reports "No Desktop Video Device Detected"
Of course, Scopebox--my intended use for this machine--can't see the input if the driver can't.

I'm stuck without a driver fix from BMD.

I currently have the DeckLink Mini Monitor 4K working fine.

Setup
M1 MacBook Air (8 Core, 16GB RAM)
Decklink Mini Monitor 4K in Sonnet Technologies Thunderbolt 3 enclosure
macoSS 11.1
DaVinci Resolve Studio 17.1B Build 11
Desktop Video 12.0b1

double checking that everyone held down the Touch ID power button while booting after install to enable system extensions and then proceeded after restart to System Preferences -> Security & Privacy -> Allow Apps downloaded from: App Store and identified developers -> Allow Blackmagic Desktop Video

Giving up for now on getting the Ultrastudio Express to work with Apple Silicon. Like others it shows in the system, I've enabled the system extensions, and given Blackmagic permission. But Desktop Video still doesn't see it via a TB3 to TB1/2 adapter. Same adapter I've been using for 4 years with my MBPro.

I am using ga thunderbolt 2 UW monitor (via a TB adapter) so my HDMI port is free. I ended up plugging in an HDMI from my mini to my Flanders scientific with an HDMI to DVI adapter. The Flanders has SDI but no HDMI (stupid Flanders! doh). And after some monitor rearranging I can now go back to monitoring FCPX on the client monitor via AVOut and it seems to look ok. Although I'm stuck with 30p or 60p. It doesn't support 29.97 or 23.98 scan rates, but the Flanders will support just about anything you throw at it. But for some reason at 60p HDMI out of the mini I got some little green dots on the Flanders, but after putting it on 30p all seems well. This will do for now, but I don't trust it for color grading that's for sure.

Hi there,

I confirm what Christopher Dobey wrote. It works just fine. At least my UltraStudio 4K Mini works fine for me with the MacBook Air M1 and Big Sur 11.1.
I just followed what he said you should do, and it made it.
Thanks a lot !

Hi All,

I have the same problem. My M1 MacBook Pro is running OS 11.1 (Big Sur)
I'm trying to connect via the UltraStudio Monitor 3G to my Dell U2720Q Monitor.
I installed Desktop Video Setup Version 12.0b Beta, but it doesn't see the UltraStudio Monitor 3G.
I get the following Error (Screen-grab attached).

As I stated in the original post, I did that. In fact, I did it twice. I succeeded in installing the beta drivers for my OWC Thunderblade. But no Intensity Shuttle. It may be that the beta says "Adds support for M1 powered Macs for Thunderbolt UltraStudio models." which doesn't say "Intensity Shuttle."

In System Report I can see "BlackmagicIO" and "Decklink Driver." Under loaded it says "no," but at present I am not connected to the Intensity Shuttle.

Update: I bought a new TB3 version of the Mini Recorder and it worked straight away. None of the TB2 devices on adapters seem to be working for anyone on the M1's.
It's a real shame if there's no driver update solution to this.

Just tried to install my Ultra Studio Monitor USB3 on my 13' MacBook Air M1 and having the same issues even though I've through the replies and did every required I still have no Joy. I suppose I'll need to wait for another software update. In the meantime ill just have to use my external monitor with a HDMI/USB3 cable

and I have this problem. installed desktop video 12 beta 1. And the program does not see Intensity Shuttle. He did all the manipulations. Erased Mac installs the older version and then upgrades to the beta version. Nothing helped. I hope everything will be adjusted in the update.

Got to be honest, the lack of communication by Blackmagic design about these updates and the causal disappearance of the Intensity Shuttle from their site, not to mention absence on this forum. makes me feel that I don’t want to buy any further products from this company. Compare it to OWC which explained why there was a delay with boot drivers for their Thunderblade series and posted a stable beta that they have been updating regularly. We have no way of knowing if Blackmagic will ever make new drivers available. Disappointing, for a product I bought a year ago.

2021-01-09 - Same Same - I bought both - UltraStudio Monitor 3G and UltraStudio Recorder 3G - both are not working!

Strange - because on the homepage - is nothing about that.
There is no information for buyers and users - that they are working on this problem or even mentioned it! There are so many companies with usb-c to HDMI - adapter and i have one with dual HDMI and it is working fine. But for reason of professionality i thought Blackmagic is the better solution. I cannot see it so far.

Latest information was: What's new in Desktop Video 12.0 Beta 1
Adds support for M1 powered Macs for Thunderbolt UltraStudio models.

After enabling extensions:

System Preferences -> Security & Privacy -> Allow Apps downloaded from: App Store and identified developers -> Allow Blackmagic Desktop Video

Remember this is Beta software.

Be sure to use a Thunderbolt 3 cable and not a Type-C cable. I also wouldn't expect official support of any Thunderbolt 2 device through a Thunderbolt 2 to 3 adapter considering Apple Silicon is built around Thunderbolt 3/USB 4 spec even though there 'should' be backwards compatibility.

It is STILL not working with Apple M1 and the interface is getting HOT. The Interface UltraStudio Recorder / Monitor 3G - with a short usb-c 3.1 compatible cabel - is still not working - the software do not recognise the interface (all rights fine by installing the software - third party ...). NO INFORMATION about this problem - on the homepage support page.

Latest information was from Blackmagic Support: What's new in Desktop Video 12.0 Beta 1
Adds support for M1 powered Macs for Thunderbolt UltraStudio models.

2021-01-16 - 2. Update from me (diekulisse).

You mention a USB-C 3.1 Cable, however these interfaces require a thundebolt cable to work.

Not good. New software is out. Intensity Shuttle is on the not-supported list. Mine isn’t even a year old. I wish we could at least get a sense for whether this company is working on intensity Shuttle support or if they just don’t care anymore.

If it's not on that list, I'm afraid you can forget it. Doesn't need to imply that BM didn't care. Maybe Apple is not supporting it on the new hardware, which probably wasn't available to outside developers when the Intensity Shuttle was made.
As you can see, the Ultra Studio Minis are not supported for M1 either. I'd assume that TB2 devices don't work with the new TB4 ports even with an adapter. Having two of those, I'm in the same boat as you.

Hasn't it always been like this? We jump on a new computer and suddenly a lot of our peripherals need replacement too…

I have the Apple M1MBP, UltraStudio Recorder 3G, Thunderbolt 3 bought from Apple; installed software allowed permission to BM Inc and Desktop Video Set up not working. Have instals ver 12 and 12 beta1 nothing works. So disappointed from Blackmagic because of the lack of support.
BMInc when are you going to fix this?

Yeah that's what I'm thinking, pity that the product has been end-of-lifed, meaning that there is now (to my knowledge) no way to get NTSC component video directly into or out of a Mac.

On the other hand, I plugged in my cheapo Elgato capture device and it just worked. So it goes.

Hi everyone,
Does the update fix the problem?
And Can you connect an extra monitor on your M1-MacBook, when you have connect your UltraStudio 4K Mini via TB to your MacBook?
I'm planning: MacBook with Caldigit ( USB-HUB) and on this an UltraStudio 4K Mini with a Videomonitor. And a big external display for time-line and Stuff. Will this work? Does some has this setup? Thank you for helping out.

If you read between the lines regarding compatibility, it's obvious that all the older units will never work.

With the old UltraStudio Mini Monitor?
Probably not, the guy makes it pretty clear: "Please note that the following are a list of Blackmagic devices that are compatible with M1 chip that we see frequent use with our services and software, older Blackmagic models like the Mini Recorder or Mini Monitor, are no longer compatible."

So, let's not confuse things here: it should work with Intel Macs, but not M1. For M1, the older (non-3G) Mini devices are EOL.

and under PCI it is listed too: USB eXtensible-Host-Controller Driver: yes Tunnel: yes Device compatibility: no

I believe BMD dont certify external eGPU chassies for their cards.
You should contact Mantis regarding the compatibility with the IP 4K.

Otherwise Sonnet are one of the better companies which offers good support for different PCI cards.
