Does this sound normal? Very noisy RAID

PostFri Dec 25, 2020 12:05 am

I've just put together a RAID with seven 10tb Ironwolf Pro drives in an OWC Thunderbay Flex enclosure, RAID 5. The disks are FAR noisier than expected. Does this sound normal or within specification to anyone who might be familiar with these drives?

0-24 seconds you can hear occasional mouse clicks where I'm selecting (but not playing) video clips from a single folder. With each click the disks spin up. At 24 seconds I play a clip and the drives get very noisy. This does not ease until the clip has stopped playing. This pattern is consistent across all clips.

My phone is about 1 ft from the enclosure, directly in front. Short of putting this in a soundproof cabinet, to me, it's unusable.

I've verified the disks in SoftRaid and it's not showing any problems, but I would say this is easily five times louder than a 4 disk RAID that I have, populated with 4TB WD Red drives. I'm not concerned with the idling noise, just when it is in operation. Could there be a mechanical problem(s)?

Thank you!
