MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2019) and egpu vs Mac M1

PostThu Jan 14, 2021 8:57 pm

Hello everyone,

I just order the new Sonet eGPU Breakaway Puck RX 5700 ( AMD Radeon RX 5700 GPU ) for $900.
I have a MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2019), 2.4 GHz 8-Core Intel Core i9, Radeon Pro Vega 20 4 GB
Intel UHD Graphics 630 1536 MB and 32GB or ram.

Do you guys think the eGPU would improve my mac performance? or should should I get the new M1 mac?

I usually edit and correct 4K BRAW in 30 and 60fps.

There are few youtube reviews but I don't think their review are accurate.

Thanks for the help!

That eGPU will improve performance considerably when rendering demanding effects and I doubt you gain anything from a M1 Mac of the current line.
People who use a lot of footage with recent GOP-formats will profit more from M1 silicon.
Now that the cat #19 is out of the bag, test it as much as you can and use the subforum.

Thanks for the reply Uli Plank!

I was checking my Radeon Pro Vega 20 4 GB performance during rendering and it was maxed out.
This is my first eGPU and there are os many options online.

Is there a better eGPU option than the AMD Radeon RX 5700 GPU ) for under 1K?
I paid about $900 for the Sonet eGPU Breakaway Puck RX 5700.

Thanks!

Well, I use Sonnet too and I'm happy with it.
Some say that two identical GPUs are the best solution, but I can't verify to the contrary.
