Blackmagic eGPU loud fan + black screen

PostSat Feb 13, 2021 2:30 pm

Hi there,

Just got a brand new Blackmagic eGPU today and I have two issues:
- The fan is very loud, continuously even if GPU usage is 0% in Activity Monitor. When I restart the noise goes down briefly and up again. Only goes off when I disconnect the USB-C cable from my MBP
- Tried running Diablo III, with the Prefer External GPU option turned on the application. Got a black screen, sound on, cursor visible with a weird resolution. Seems very similar to this issue : https://us.forums.blizzard.com/en/d3/t/ ... ideo/25017

Anything I could try? I installed the latest firmware update (1.2) that I could find here, doesn't solve the issue.

Note: I do not have an external monitor, just running this on my MBP

Thanks in advance,
Romain

Specifications:
- macOS Big Sur version 11.2.1 (20D74)
- MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2017, Two Thunderbolt 3 ports)
- Processor 2.3 GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i5
- Memory 8 GB 2133 MHz LPDDR3
- Graphics Intel Iris Plus Graphics 640 1536 MB

Sounds like DOA. Is it recognised at all (small symbol in the menu bar)?

Yes, it is recognized in the top-right menu bar (chip icon), with an option to safely disconnect the device.

If it's the model with the 580, it should be very silent, hardly audible when you put your ears close to it.
Can't speak for the pro model.

Same with the eGPU PRO Model Vega 56 - should be very silent.
