Ultra Studio 4K Mini for Edit Suite

PostWed Apr 21, 2021 1:00 pm

Hi,

I'm looking into replacing some ageing kit in one of our edit suites. We currently have a BM Studio 4K in there, its some years old now and has had to have the internal fan repaired due to failure.

Anyways - I'm on a bit of a budget and was wondering the Mini 4K Studio is capable of running in a fixed workstation. The edit suite would really only be dealing with ProRes HQ HD and AVC-Intra 100 MXF OP1a media - outputting to a Flanders HD Monitor and a TV (Something like a Sony Bravia) for edit/client playback.

The kit seems to be aimed at laptop users for portability. I'm just curious if it's suitable for an edit suite environment. We have no need for tape capture etc.

Thanks!

It don't see why it shouldn't. There are folks with iMacs or even iMac Pros who used it in their suites.
No, an iGPU is not enough, and you can't use HEVC 10 bit 4:2:2 in the free version.

This is how I use mine. If there is any negative to the unit it would be there is no power switch. It's always on until you unplug it. Other than that I love it.

A Decklink card might be a better choice if you have internal PCI slots available.

thanks for all the feedback! - Glad to know it works well. Looking at this over a decklink card due to it being easier to connect to studio speakers and the microphone input on the front.

Just be aware, that the microphone input doesn't work with Resolve for just audio, only with Avid. I love it too, it's a fully functioning, no nonsense bit of kit. The ref in and RS422 connection work well with legacy tape decks too. I bought a mains adaptor with a switch for quick on and off. I use it to online to a grading monitor with a laptop - you will have to make sure the desktop has TB3, if it does there is no difference in using it to other higher end Decklinks.

Thanks for the tip regarding the microphone input.

I'm not really up to speed with the decklink cards - do they support breakout cables for XLR speakers for example?

Thanks,
Michael

You didn't mention your specs, so a reminder, you need thunderbolt 3 to run it, and if your box only has 1 thunderbolt 3, I would go internal, and leave the thunderbolt available for drives.

If you are on a budget, i'm pretty sure the internal cards are less expensive, and I think the decklink studio 4k comes with a breakout cable.

As for your original question, there are tons of people using these on desktop setups. I would guess more portable setups are using the mini monitor, and mini recorder, as they are super portable.

I really want to see some footage from a Sony A7iii with a lens I borrowed, but just upgraded to 17.1.1 tonight... Didn't think it would kill my Reference monitor with a Ultra Studio Mini Monitor...

I was told to look into this SubForum to see if "it is an older unit". Does anyone have any thought about this?

*EDIT* I think I found it... BMD makes a Ultra Studio Mini Monitor 3G that has a usb-c. Mine has the old Thunderbolt 2... I think? I'm going to check that out and see what happens, but I think that should solve the issue. Going to actually call them to see if that will...

You'll need an adapter like the AKiTiO T3T to use the TB2 version on a Mac with TB3.
Unfortunately, it's not made any more.
No, an iGPU is not enough, and you can't use HEVC 10 bit 4:2:2 in the free version.
