VHS content digitization with Resolve 17

PostMon May 03, 2021 5:57 pm

Hello everyone,
I want to transfer VHS videos from a DVD/VCR player to Resolve 17.
I have a Pro 4K intensity card.
I have connected the player output to the SCART output with a SCART -> Component cable but I can't get the images in.
I set my Intensity as follows:

Video output
- Video output: Std 750p50
- Analog video output: Component

Video input
- Input connection: Component

Input audio signal levels
- Stereo std

Input conversion
- None

Output conversion
- None

But I can't see the images in my capture window in Resolve.
Can you help me and give me the parameters to enter in the project settings so that I can do this please?

Thank you very much.

VHS output is usually 480i (NTSC) or 576i (PAL), on a capture side the input should also be the same - so ex. 576i 25fps or 480i 29.97fps

basically, check that your input and output are the same.

Bonjour TambetK,

Christophe

When we have to capture from analog, we use Blackmagic Media Express, and it's pretty simple and straightforward. For PAL, I'd suggest 720×576 and 25P. You may find that VHS tapes are unstable enough that you'll need a TBC, which has been discussed on the forum before.

Good evening,

Thank you very much for your help which was very precious to me. I finally found the solution by connecting a composite cable to my "Intensity Pro 4K" card.

But I still have a problem:
When I digitize a VHS tape, they are often damaged by time and there are sometimes skips that stop the capture.
It seems to me that you can deactivate the option "stop capture if frames jump" but I don't know where to find this option in the capture settings. Can you help me?

Thank you very much for your help.

You may need a TBC (time base corrector).
No, an iGPU is not enough, and you can't use HEVC 10 bit 4:2:2 in the free version.

Studio 18.6.5, MacOS 13.6.5
MacBook M1 Pro, 16 GPU cores, 32 GB RAM and iPhone 15 Pro
Speed Editor, UltraStudio Monitor 3G, iMac 2017, eGPU

Thank you for your answer.

Indeed, I will probably have to find a TBC but for the moment, my search for one is fruitless.

Another problem, now that I manage to capture the videos, I have no sound feedback on my speakers when I transfer the video with sound to the timeline.
No playback of the sound even though it is present on the timeline, even in Fairlight!

Thanks for your help.

You can find a Snell & Wilcox, which used to be top of the line, for less than 1K €. A FOR.A can be far cheaper. If you find a good offer, I'd expect to be able to sell it after the project without much of a loss.

Regarding your sound issue, look for it here in the forum, it has happened to others too and there are solutions.
