Ultra Studio Mini Monitor not working in Desktop 12.1

PostFri May 28, 2021 3:20 pm

I recently updated my Desktop Video to 12.1. Also just updated Resolve to 17.2 having also updated my OS to 11.4. When I first hooked up the USMM it updated the hardware with what seemed like a firmware revision to the USMM. Rebooted and all that. I checked my desktop preferences and the device is not recognized. Hence I can't select it as the I/O in Resolve. The USMM is thunderbolt 2 and I'm using the apple TB2 to USBC adapter to connect to my MacBook Pro.

Does anyone have any insight into this problem?

Cheers

There’s only one adapter that works in this configuration, the AKiTiO T3T. Unfortunately, they don’t make it any more. I could kick myself for not buying two, having a Mini Recorder too.
No, an iGPU is not enough, and you can't use HEVC 10 bit 4:2:2 in the free version.

I don't have any troubleshooting tips apart from allowing Desktop Video in System Preferences > Security & Privacy if it's listed as blocked, but I can confirm that it should work.

I'm using macOS 11.4, MacBook Pro (13 inch 2019), Desktop Video 12.1, UltraStudio Mini Monitor ThunderBolt 2 (updated to the firmware supplied with 12.1) connected via the Apple Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter. Works without issues.

I have a similar problem. My Mini Monitor works intermittently., It switches between having a picture and then blinking to a black screen. The white LED light on the device remains on consistently, even though the picture is not consistent. I can get a picture out of it (SDI and HDMI), generally when I first plug it in and then after a few minutes it starts blinking to just black (not the video feed), and at time the monitoring screen will say no signal present. I have tested the video output feed from Premiere Pro 2021 as well as Resolve 17.1 Studio. With multiple cables verified to work with other monitoring outputs. It does the same thing with both software. The Ultra Studio Mini Monitor (USMM) appears as a video playback / monitor option in both software

My Mac OS is 10.15.7.
My computer is Macbook Pro 15" 2019
I am using an apple Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter that I bought especially to use with the USMM.

I have tried Desktop Video 12.1 and this updated the firmware on the USMM. This practically did not work at all, just the occasional picture, and then I rolled back to 11.7. 11.7 gave me better results. When I rolled back it updated the device firmware at the same time. Using Desktop Video 11.7, it is far from reliable, or acceptable, but the output picture stayed on for longer. There is also noticeable picture degradation when displaying a picture, kind of like video static/glitches. This happens sometimes not always and the video output will degrade without touching the device. It does not seem to be a connector. The picture will be working and then without even touching it, it will gradually degrade and then start blinking to black. When I scrub the time line or press play, the picture will frequently improve.

I have considered buying the newer Mini Monitor 3G, as I just need it sorted, even though I don't know why I should have to, given this device should work (having never been maltreated), but having researched other people issue with this device, it seems like people are getting inconsistent performance form the 3G model also. Any solutions, particularly from Black Magic, who must be aware of this issue are very welcome...

the akitio adapter no longer works under bug shure, as apple refuses to support
all non-certified adapters under bug shure.
(because of the defects caused by thirdparty adapters and hubs that were not certified by apple).

Interesting.
I'm watching my work right now on a calibrated screen via the AKiTiO T3T and the USMM from a Mac mini under Big Sur 11.3.1 without any problems. The USMR works too, BTW.

Mmm, I just had to update to BigSur today (don't ask me why). Anyway, updated to Desktop 12.1 ... noted the Firmware progresss thing.... let it go through... then it said it failed!
Now I have nothing, not even the little white LED on the USMM is working. :-(
(hooked up to a MacPro trashcan... and it's been flawless up until now)

perhaps this also affects only M1 devices?
does this combination also work with your wife's computer?

No, it does not work with M1. You didn't mention that.
None of these devices is on the list of compatible ones from BM.

Ah, got it, I'll try.

OK, just tried with a small TB2 RAID when I could snatch the laptop for a moment. Yes, the AKiTiO T3T works flawlessly with M1. So, it's just the USMM that's incompatible.

Does the original Apple adapter work for you with an Intel Mac?

My situation is almost identical.
Just did a clean install of all software on my computer, erased hard drive, Reinstalled big sur 11.4, reinstalled Resolve 17.2, and tried desktop video 11.1. 11.7 and 12.1. All failed. Like Wilfred I am using the Ultrastudio mini monitor with thunderbolt to usb c adaptor.
Every individual element is the same as before my clean install but now I have no video at all...

Off to bed, perhaps I'll have a stroke of genius in the morning, or if I'm really lucky I'll find a kind person has found a solution on this forum!

Intrestingly, the mac itself is recognising the mini monitor fine...

Cheers

Does anyone know what the correct firmware version for the Ultrastudio mini monitor is, when using Desktop Video Setup 12.1?

According to the Apple System Report, mine is 7.3 - I wonder if this is my problem?

Thanks

Are you on Intel or Apple silicon? I don't get 11.4 offered for my Intel Mac mini, I'm still on 11.3.1.
If you're on M1, I'm afraid it's buying a new device, the old one is not listed for these machines.
This is my info, and it works on Intel:

Yes, 12.1, so the only differences I can spot are the OS and the cable version.

Hi all,

I've had some similar issues to things described in many threads like this one and tried all of the solutions I could find in numerous forums and threads!!

I FOUND A SOLUTION!!! But depending on your issues I am not brave enough to suggest this will work for everyone. However, because it worked for me, I thought I'd share the situation and the steps I took in the hopes it helps other people and can stop you all from the stress and head scratching these problems cause.

We run multiple webinars daily and use Zoom, Skype, and Teams. Everything was fine until we updated the Macs to Big Sur Version 11.4. Nothing worked. No screen sharing capabilities in Zoom. Blackmagic Desktop Video couldn't find the device (we use the UltraStudio Mini Recorder). No amount of uninstalls and reinstalls worked. Removing kext files didn't work. Head scratching and foul language ensued for a few days, along with reading every thread and forum I could find.

Today, I sat at the Mac with the issue and did the following.

1. Uninstalled Blackmagic Desktop Video
2. Uninstalled Zoom, Skype, and Teams
3. Restarted the Mac.
4. Downloaded the latest version of Desktop Video 12.1
5. Opened Desktop Video and finally...the device was found the UltraStudio Mini Recorder was there.
6. Reinstalled Zoom.
7. Opened Zoom and the Camera worked via the Mini Recorder.
8. Got stressed because Share Screen wouldn't work and was caught in an endless loop of Open System Settings for Security and Privacy.
9. Opened Terminal and ran a ScreenCapture reset (command is: tccutil reset ScreenCapture)
10. Opened Zoom and got the "request permissions" and "open settings" dialogue boxes.
11. Opened Security & Privacy and manually added Zoom into the screen recording setting (click the + button and got to Applications, select Zoom, click Open).
12. Restarted Zoom as per the pop-up.
13. Cheered in celebration that the share screen function finally worked.
14. Reinstalled Teams - manually added it to the Screen Recording section in Security & Privacy
15. Reinstalled Skype - added to Screen Recording permissions
16. Walked away happy because everything is now working properly and the UltraStudio Mini Recorder and all screen sharing is doing what it should.

Still using Big Sur 11.4 (didn't need to change that, on the most up-to-date version of Desktop Video, and using the latest releases on Zoom, Teams, and Skype.

I really hope at least a few of you can find some success with these steps. I cannot say that all the steps are needed, just think it is best to explain exactly what I did in case.

Many thanks,
Lloyd
