BEST OLED FOR CLIENT MONITOR?

Hi guys,

Just looking for recommendations for a client monitor to output from Resolve and NLE's etc.
I am looking at 2 in particular, the LG 77C1 and the SONY XR77A80JU.
Anyone have any experience with any of these sets?
I plan to calibrate once I decide so I can get as close a match up as humanly possible to my broadcast monitor just so the client can get a good representation of grade.

Also, I will be running an SDI from Mini Monitor 4k to the monitor and the HDMI to the OLED through a Sonnet TB2 expansion chassis, did I read somewhere on here before that I need a powered splitter for this to output to the TV?

Thanks in advance for any recommendations/advice...

John

You may also want to look at Panasonic.
Not sure if they kept their "pro" line, but in the best they had very good models (but way more expensive than LG).
Splitter is needed only if you have issues. BM HDMI has issues with some TV models. First try direct connection.

update: looks like latest Panasonic lineup is not that good, compared to the past.

Thanks Andrew.

Yes I think Sony and LG are probably the best on the market now as far as OLEDs go.
I just remember being to a big post house here in Dublin a couple of years back and they were running Resolve which fed into their client monitor which was I think was a 2018 65" LG and it looked really great.

You want it to be accurate not do WOW factor :)
LG has probably best quality/price ratio.

LG C series monitors are very commonly seen as client monitors for SDR. You may need a powered splitter if you have issues with the HDMI out, as said.

Thanks Jack.

Currently looking at the LG C1 while also keeping an eye out for last years CX model which i believe is just as good and a good deal cheaper.

Looks like C1 may not be worth the extra price.

When the new models release, you can usually find older ones at an excellent price on eBay and so on.

I mean there is not that much difference and new model is not much better.
Although if you want to use it for grading then you look at it slightly difference (than home buy).

I've just bought a Panasonic TX40JX850B 40" TV for a replacement to the trusty 10 year old 37" Sony Bravia HD, for a client monitor. I had no choice since that is the space I have in my boutique suite. It was the best (only) choice in that size. It has all the HDR flavours though not enough nits to do any of them justice but is quite good for a SDR client monitor. Since it is a VA panel it has very acceptable contrast and covers rec. 709 nicely. Fortunately I am quite pleased with it. On paper it seems better than last years models since it has an upgraded AI HCX processor.

The reason the LGs are so popular is they accept 3D luts for calibration. Fortunately again, since my reference monitor is able to send an independent 3D lut on it's output, to the client monitor, I was freerer in my limited choice. A client monitor really only has to satisfy grade 3 requirements and it is a positive advantage that they replicate the consumer experience, though somewhat accurately, hopefully.

This needs confirmation but several YouTube videos and other color grading discussion have offer to give the Hisense H9G 55" and 65" LED a cheap alternative to the LG C series as a color and client monitoring display. Apparently you can pretty much access many internal controls to make it so.

I've used the LG C8, C9 and CX; all 55''.

What makes them so great as client monitors is the ease in which they can be perceptually matched to your reference monitor.

I am actually looking at the LG GX models, I think they replaced the CX models.
