Ultrastudio 4k Mini datarate question

PostFri Oct 08, 2021 3:36 am

Hi there,

I use an ultrastudio 4kmini currently to do the following
- UHD HDR SDI out
- UHD SDR Trim out
- UHD HDR SDI in
- UHD HDR SDI Out (loop)
- UHD HDR HDMI Out
- 2x XLR Analogue Audio Out

It is currently running on its own dedicated Thunderbolt 3 bus from a Mac Pro and running great.

I am planning on changing setups to use Longer Optical Thunderbolt 3 cables and would be daisy chaining the above off a thunderbolt 3 dock also driving 2x 1440P displays and some USB devices/portable drives.

I am just wondering if this could pose any issues? Or would I be best to run 2 cables with one dedicated for the ultrastudio 4k mini?

Should be still ok, but it depends on TB3 controller and actual implementation.

Monitors goes over dedicated channel compared to data (and BM will be using data channel as far as I understand).

Buy a good cable. Not every certified TB3 cable seams to deliver the same rates.
OWC and Caldigit have some new cables out (TB3) that support 100W power but are pricy.

I have some cheaper ~20-30€ 2-metre cables, OWC/Calldigit out-performe them with the same "specs".

400€+ for the optical cables is something.

yeah I dont really have a choice with the optical cables, corning seems to be the only player in town. machine room is about a 20m cable run away. Im just going to run 2 cables, 1 for the ultra studio and 1 for the monitors/usb over an OWC dock

thanks for the replies guys :)
