Cintel RED channel clipping *auto black*

PostSun Nov 14, 2021 2:10 am

Hi, I'm scanning B/W camera negative (Kodak 5222): when choosing 'auto black' it appears the red channel always clips the highlights... I'm scanning HDR, is this an issue?

I'm assuming most of data is coming from the green channel since it's a bayer chip so... meh? Also, since I'm scanning HDR does it recover that red channel data on the second sweep?

Thanks!
Brandon

Hi Brandon,

in HDR mode there is no freedom to manually set the light levels, as we need to ensure good blending. But in principal, so long as you 'calibrate' on the 'brightest' frame in the scene/reel, you will not have this issue.

It's very common that people just randomly calibrate on any frame, which of course means it will go into clip if there is wide variation in the exposure throughout the reel.

That said, if this were true, you should be receiving a warning along those lines about 'clipping' in the Resolve overlay while it's capturing.

Cheers
