Question on HDMI to SDI 12G Micro Converter

PostTue Nov 30, 2021 5:34 am

I'm looking to upgrade my current video editing set up and had a question on the 12g Micro Converter.

I currently have a UHD Eizo Grading Monitor, that's connected (Via HMDI) to a HDMI to SDI 6G Mini Converter, which is then connected (Via SDI) to a BlackMagic 8k Pro Decklink in my computer.

With this set up, I can only send up to a 4:2:2 signal to the monitor.

Would I be wrong in assuming the 12g Micro Converter (in place of the 6G Mini Converter) will allow me to send a 4:4:4 signal to the grading monitor?

You would think so, but read product specs.
BM finally added 2K support, but those converters are exclusively 4:2:2 only. They work only in YUV domain at 4:2:2.
For 4:4:4 your best bet would be AJA converter which is way more expensive though.

Thanks for the reply, Do you know which AJA converter would work with 4:4:4? I'm having a little trouble finding the info on BH.

What monitor do you have?
Read those docs (Eizo done some testing):

Blackmagic Design Teranex Mini SDI to HDMI 12G Converter is probably not the best choice:
https://www.eizoglobal.com/support/comp ... i_12g.html

looks like it works only in 4:2:2 mode with Eizo. BM's HDMI implementation is problematic, not only with Eizo but with many different displays including TVs (specially LG).

I would probably go with:
https://www.aja.com/products/hi5-12g
but asked first AJA and Eizo if they can confirm good 444 10bit support.
Aja box gives you very detailed control over output and other parameters.

You have to be sure you will get 444 at 10bit and with Decimator it's not obvious at all. Quite often you get some conversion to 8bit RGB.
