PC--> Mac Mini M1 ??????

PostSun Dec 05, 2021 11:58 am

I've always worked on mac
But the prices of the mac pros put me off.
So I bought a PC
Now with the Mini Mac M1 I wanted to go back to Mac because it is affordable now.

Is it wise to switch from PC to Mac mini 16GB ??
I mainly work with long projects such as feature films.
Always use proress or Braw 6k in timeline HD or 4K
I newer use fusion so far

No, that's not wise in my opinion. Wait for a Mac mini with more GPU, which may come next year, or get one of the new laptops. These are impressive, but considerably more expensive than a mini.

If you are only editing and doing some mild grading, the current Mac mini M1 is acceptable, even for UHD delivery. But as soon as you need NR, Optical Flow or demanding filters it'll become very slow.

but with current PC it is also very slow with the NR and many demanding filters
I don't know what the mac mini does when exporting the project to proress , h264 or DCP
Will that make the difference??

In this thread I suggested two tests, one for Fusion and one for DR: viewtopic.php?f=21&t=150120. The source files are still online. Try for yourself on your PC, the values for the Mac mini and the new laptop are in that thread.

If anything you would have to switch to new MacBook Max and the you should see gain in about every case (and huge gain for simple timelines with where ProRes is on source/export). This will cost you real money though and maybe it's better in such a case to switch to new PC workstation. M1 macmini is not a real solution for you I think. What is the point to spend money to get no improvement or just small one? Save more money and buy system which gives you real improvement.

Second that. If you don't need the portability, get a decent PC desktop.
If you want MacOS, wait a few months. Strong GPUs for a PC are hard to find anyway.

M1 is an entry level product, can't handle 4K (h.264), will struggle with ProRes and BRaw.
M1 Max / Pro can handle... but you can get a very good PC (upgradeable / dual processors) for the same amount of money... if the money you have is hard-earned, stay with PC.

Most M1 Mac user reports disagree with this. H264 is supported natively and ProRes is no issue.

Please differentiate between the M1 models from last year, like MB Air and 13", Mac mini and iMac. These are entry-level models and only limited of use for DR.
The MacBook M1 Pro and Max are very capable laptops which are rivalled only by the strongest gaming laptops under Windows. But then, they are not getting throttled on battery and are very silent. IMHO, they are the best portable solution for DR right now, but they can't beat a high-end desktop PC.

I think this blogpost is giving you a pretty good perspective: https://blog.neatvideo.com/post/m1-max-others

NeatVideo is quite demanding temporal NR (one of the best) and this is his bottom line:

Mac M1 Max costs 3500$ and 3900$ with 64GB of RAM. No need to pay for overpriced Nvme.
These numbers are actually better than I expected in favour for Max.
If exports were done to ProRes (or h264/5) then things could actually be even more interesting.

Interesting are number for export for Max and HP. Even if GPU denoising is faster on HP then export is much slower. DNxHR export requires not crazy amount of CPU (both machines could easily do few times more than those 10fps until CPU is at 100%), so problem here lies in fact that HP could start throttling during exports or we see gains of unified memory in Max.

PC can be cheaper and perform better but reliability is also very important .
I don't use my PC for email or internet, just edit video.
But after an update, it crashed and I had to take it away.
I don't like windows once when the new mac mini with better GPU option are there I will trade it in I think and take the mac mini which will also be cheaper than the macbook pros I hope
