ProRes Raw on BM 6K Pro?

PostTue Jan 04, 2022 6:56 pm

Hello,

My background is in HD using Final Cut Pro (FCP). I just began using my new BM 6K Pro camera. My intention is to move towards using B Raw and edit in DaVinci Resolve after I get the basics of the new camera under my belt. However, for the moment I wanted to start out using Pro Res and edit in FCP just to get my feet wet with the new camera before moving into a whole new editing environment and format with Resolve.

I would like to use the best Pro Res available for the moment so I can do a better comparison to B Raw once I make that transition. My understanding is that there is a ProRes version called ProRes Raw.

Does my BM 6K Pro camera shoot in ProRes Raw? If so, which ProRes selection in the Record screen is the one for ProRes Raw? If not, which is the best ProRes option available on the BM 6K Pro?

Thanks!

ProRes Raw is completely different from other Prores flavors and does not come supported by Blackmagic (yet). Why not shoot Braw? Smaller files, better image quality, it's better in every respect.

I'd rather shoot in BRaw. But, for the moment I'm still using FCP for editing. So, if I shoot in BRaw right now is there any way to edit in FCP until I learn DaVinci? Or, is it just impossible?

Using it directly is impossible.
You could convert to ProRes 4444, but then it might be the better option to shoot ProRes 422 HQ in camera.
No, an iGPU is not enough, and you can't use HEVC 10 bit 4:2:2 in the free version.

Oh doi, I forgot about that. I really, really hate the fact that we're getting a bunch of competing codecs now that are not supported by some major editing platforms (looking at you as well, Blackmagic).

Looks rather like a little war between two of them.

Thanks for all of the replies. This helps give me something to work with as I transition on to B Raw and DaVinci!

Well, don’t blame Blackmagic:

We have tried a couple of times to get permission to do the work ourselves and develop a plugin to support Blackmagic RAW in FCPX like we do for Premiere/Avid. If users really want to see it then it may help to send more requests to Apple.

Saying "Thx for help!" is not a crime.
