You are quite correct...as has been suggested it appears that the storage media was the culprit.
I mistakenly reported using a Samsung T5 (it actually is a T7 but I don't think that makes any difference).
I tried a couple Angelbird 128GB AV Pro Mk 2 UHS-II SDXC cards and can record pretty much as long as I like. Just completed one that is an hour and 47 minutes
I've got a lot to learn in this area so thanks to all for your appreciated thoughtful comments.
BTW, all storage that I've been using are exFAT file system.
