HyperDeck Studio HD Plus Record limits?

PostFri Jan 07, 2022 8:01 pm

Blackmagic Design HyperDeck Studio HD Plus

Are there limits to how long one can record?

I bought it to digitize some of my old tape...
It works fine but quits recording right at 19 minutes every time.

Some of my tapes are an hour or longer, this means I have to remain in attendance rather than to go off to do something else as I have to be there to restart recording each time.

Is this normal and/or is there a work around?

Thank you.

Are you using a time base corrector? My guess is that the source has a sufficient enough timing issue at that point that the recorder can't handle it.

Could this be a file size issue on your HDD?

Nope (good thought though).
These are mostly old VHS tapes shot by my brother about 25 years ago.
Old School VCR direct to the HyperDeck.
Thanks.

Don’t think so…using a Samsung 1TB T-5 SSD.
Will try a couple different solutions later today.
Also will post a screen shot of present results…files are right at 19 minutes and around 4GB in size.
The files, so far, view perfectly.
Thanks.

What is your file system? Around 4GB sounds like FAT32 problem.

No, I know for a fact we can do over 90 minutes as one ProRes clip, no problem. I think we can do up to 2 hours, but I haven't done it recently. It helps to use an extremely fast SD card.

As far as I understand there is no time limit. Limit is your storage.
If you see random dropouts then your card is not good enough or there is other issue like poor SDI signal. If you capture from VHS then you need time base corrector. It has been discussed here many times.

You are quite correct...as has been suggested it appears that the storage media was the culprit.
I mistakenly reported using a Samsung T5 (it actually is a T7 but I don't think that makes any difference).
I tried a couple Angelbird 128GB AV Pro Mk 2 UHS-II SDXC cards and can record pretty much as long as I like. Just completed one that is an hour and 47 minutes
I've got a lot to learn in this area so thanks to all for your appreciated thoughtful comments.

BTW, all storage that I've been using are exFAT file system.

It actually does make a difference. The T5 is recommended as a usable drive for the Pocket 4K/6K cameras, but the T7 is not, and if you try, records will randomly fail. The T7 must have a smaller cache or other difference that is causing a similar failure here.

Good to know... That info will save me countless time/issues moving forward (and I hope to avoid much more time spent in the VHS department).

Again, my thanks.

This forum has proven to be an extremely valuable resource for me through the years.
