Which Thunderbolt? UltraStudio Mini Monitor (not 3G version)

PostWed May 04, 2022 9:50 am

I have an older UltraStudio Mini Monitor (not 3G). Is the input cable supposed to be Thunderbolt 1 or 2?
Thanks kindly!

TB2. It can be adapted to TB3, but not for M1 Macs.
No, an iGPU is not enough, and you can't use HEVC 10 bit 4:2:2 in the free version.

Studio 18.6.5, MacOS 13.6.5
MacBook M1 Pro, 16 GPU cores, 32 GB RAM and iPhone 15 Pro
Speed Editor, UltraStudio Monitor 3G, iMac 2017, eGPU

So Uli, for M1 Macs, which mini monitor will work with it?
URSA Mini Pro 4.6K G2, Blackmagic Design Pocket Cinema Camera 6K, Panasonic GH5
PC Workstation Core I7 64Gb, 2 x AMD R9 390X 8Gb, Blackmagic Design DeckLink 4K Mini Monitor, Windows 10 Pro 64-bit, Resolve Studio 18, BM Micro Panel & Speed Editor

Is blackmagic planning to fix this?
I mean, these things were expansive (not as cheap as hdmi or usbc cables anyway) and right now they still cost about a month’s tuition on my kid’s school.

Running Resolve 18 Studio on a Mini M1 with a thunderbolt 2 adaptor. My not 3g Mini monitor won’t work. It’s (sort of) a bummer. How do we get blackmagic to comment on this? Is my very well build Not 3G MM a very expensive paperweight? Can I at least send it back so BM can repurpose some of these components, it’s a shame to throw away all that beautiful silicon mined out of Congo and the thousand litters of water used to make the steel of outer casket. All the copper some African was enslaved to dig out of the earth, well, you guys understand where I’m going with this…

Sell it to someone with an Intel Mac or a PC.
I wouldn’t wait for BM to fix it. If it were easy, they’d have done it already.
And then, it wasn’t expensive compared to competing devices.

I have both an Intel and an M1 Mac, and the MiniMonitor (not 3g) isn't working on either one.

I've tried the MiniMonitor (not 3G) on a 2014 Intel MacBook Pro (Big Sur 11.7), and on a 2022 Mac Studio M1 Monterey 12.6). On the Mac Studio, I am connecting the UltraStudio MiniMonitor's Thunderbolt 2 through an older Mac Thunderbolt monitor.

On the Mac Studio, neither Apple's Preferences/Displays nor Blackmagic's "Desktop Video Setup" will recognize the MiniMonitor.

On the 2014 Intel MacBook Pro, Apple's Preferences/Displays does not recognize the MiniMonitor.
Blackmagic's "Desktop Video Setup" does recognize the MiniMonitor, but both the HDMI and the SDI Outputs are grayed out. (They are connected to a BlackMagic Video Assist 4K and a Flanders Scientific monitor.)

I'm at a loss. BlackMagic's "readme" says the MiniMonitor is supported on both of my Macs; it doesn't seem to be supported on either.
