Braw files are not readable

PostWed Nov 23, 2022 12:12 pm

Hello,

I have a Problem with braw files that are not playing.
Here are the facts, I'm happy if someone can help me or guide so to existing posts.

- Show recorded with 7 cameras for 4 artists
- 4x7 files, 1 Artist perfomred aprox 20 Min, ~75GB per file
- 1x Ursa MiniProg2 | 2x Pocket 6kpro | 3x Pocket 6k | 1x Canon c70
- all recorded to SanDisk SSD with USB-C to USB-C in braw 8:1 (c70 Canon Raw light)
- all SSD were hocked to a 7 slot USB 3.2gen2 Dock with same USB-C to USB-A cables
- copied from a Windows machine via Teracopy to a JBOD on HDD (HFS Plus Drives read and write with HFS+ for Windows by Paragon Software)
- after copying checked the files with DaVinci
- Braw files just show up only from the 1st Artist
- ALL files from 2nd 3rd 4th Artist braw-files don't show up in DaVinci, are also not playable with Blackmagic Raw player
- ALL c70 Canon Raw light are readable and playable
- files were check on camera during the show and worked
- files on the HDD and original SSD have the same problem
- SSD were checked on the very same cameras and are also not able to play the files
- we recorded and copied multiple show the same way and all went without problems

Because the files were playable on the camera directly after the show, I guess the problem must be during the copiying. Does anyone have an idea where the problem might be?

Greetings from Germany

I am not sure... but HFS+ is from Apple, right?

Maybe copying the files to Windows didn't work, which has a different file system (NTFS).
Maybe you can try to copy the files to a Mac and check if the files are readable.

Anyway, that's where I would look for the fault.

For this reason, I always format the SSDs as exFAT.

I,m trying to work out the work flow here

so you shot on to SSD drive from the camera

then checked the files and they played on all the cameras

then copied that to a JBOD drive

its this bit I don't get

"SSD were checked on the very same cameras and are also not able to play the files"

so after coping the and reattaching the original SSD would not play the files on the cameras is that right

What's the format of those SSDs?
Can you see the files on SSD (not play, but see the data)?
If so, how do the sizes compare to the copies?
Maybe AI can help you. Or make you obsolete.

It is said that Paragon HFS for Windows is unreliable and can mess up the file system after a while.
I have no first hand experience supporting that claim but have read this over and over again over many years.

Better use HFSExplorer (it can only read, not write to HFS):

I am also not sure if it is a good idea using a 7 port USB3.2 dock and connecting 7 SSDs onto that at once. Quite likely that dock won't be able to supply power reliably to 7 ports.
Which dock exactly are you using?
Saying "Thx for help!" is not a crime.

Does Teracopy make checksums to verify?
Can we be sure that Teracopy and Paragon HFS+ don't interfere?

If you're doing your edit on Windows, I think the safest bet is just to copy all the files to a Windows NTFS drive. If you need to go back to Mac at some point, I'd create a Media Managed version of the final edit to an HFS+ Journaled drive if possible.

I have been using Paragon HFS+ for several years and regularly am given mac drives, I've never encountered these problems.

Yes I can see the files on the SSD it was recorded to also on the HFS JBOD, also copied to a mac from the SSDs but non are playable. File size in SSDs it was recorded to an HFS+ JBOD are same.

Ok guys, thanks for your answers so far.
I'm aware that a workflow using the same platform (MAC or WIN formated drives) would make more sense, but sometimes production can be not uniform as in this case.

The hub I used was a CSL - 8 Port USB 3.2 Gen.2 Port Hub. It really might have been the cause for problems, although it worked on two shows bevor without problems. This workflow was kind of necesary to empty the drives between the shows over night wihtout getting up every hour to plug the next drive.

Nonetheless, my primary goal is to find a way if these files are recoverable for edit - and then try to find a workflow for the next time.
Does somebody know if there is a way to see if the files have some kind of corrupted header, to maybe rewrite it or any other idea how to work with these files?

I think your best bet would Aero Quartet, a Spanish company specialized in repairing video files:
https://aeroquartet.com/treasured/index.en.html

We already had cases here in this forum where they were able to help, also a friend of mine got her files repaired (damaged by a Sony camera error).
