Mac Pro 4K HDR to 4K LG via Micro Converters and SDI

PostWed Nov 23, 2022 5:22 pm

Hi there!

I need help. I have a setup which doesn't work for some reason. I have a nice editing/colorgrading- room where I have a 86inch LG 4K HDR screen for the client about 7 meters from my workdesk.

So a HDMI cable from my Mac Pro to the TV would be too long. So I came up with this setup:

HDMI out (Mac Pro 2019) -> short 8K HDMI Cable -> BlackMagic Design Micro Converter (HDMI to SDI 12G) -> 12G HD-SDI Cable - BNC to BCN 25 meters -> BlackMagic Design Micro Converter (SDI 12G to HDMI) -> short 8K HDMI Cable

For some reason, I can only send 1080p to the TV. When I change the signal to 2160p, the TV isn't showing the picture.

Can anyone help me out? I believe with this setup everything should stay 4K right?

Just to be sure, I have test HDMI cable out of the Mac Pro 2019 into a 4K screen, and that worked.

Thanks in advance!
Greetings,

Joas

Convoluted setup.
Is 7m all what you need?
I'm sure you can get decent HDMI 10m (or even 20m) cable which will cost way less than all your converters.
There are also HDMI fibre extenders which can go long distance (way pass 100m). Probably still cheaper than your converters.

I need more then 7 meters. The screen is 7 meters from my workstation, but I don't want a cable through the room. Now the cable is going to the wall, over the sealing, down again towards the screen.
So it's around 12 meters or so.

And thanks for the tips to spend less money, but I already have bought and installed this setup. I just don't understand why it isn't working. All parts should keep the signal 4K.
Greetings,

Joas

12 meters is easily doable with HDMI.
There must be some issue with UHD and your converters. Are you using 444?

Are you sending a 10 bit signal?
HDMI 2.0 (o both converters) is limited in what it can support on higher resolution and higher bit-rate.

10bit should not be the issue (although also can)- 444 vs 422 is more likely.

Yes and no.
UHD + 10 bit + 444 = no (20.3Gb)
UHD + 8 bit + 444 = yes (17.8 Gb)
UHD + 10 bit + 422 = yes (11.9 Gb)

This assumes 59.94 fps.

Both sample rate and bit depth affect the data rate, as well as fps.
HDMI 2.0 has 18Gb.

Yep, hence question about use of 444 :)
It’s typically way better to work in 10bit 422 than with 8bit 444.

Try using an optical HDMI cable.
