UltraStudio Monitor 3G help!

Hello everyone.

I recently upgraded to a Mac Studio and am building out the rest of my upgrade. I'm trying to test out the UltraStudio Monitor 3G so I have it ready to go when I upgrade to a proper color calibrated monitor.

UltraStudio is detected by Desktop Video v12.4.2 and seems that Resolve sees it too.
Problem: No output to any monitor that I try using HDMI. (no SDI capable monitors here yet)

Info:
-Mac Studio Ultra
-MacOS Ventura 13.1.
-Resolve Studio v18.1.2
-Thunderbolt direct connection to UltraStudio.
-New Thunderbolt 3 cables rated for 40 Gbps. Cables test good when used with Caldigit TS4.
-Various new HDMI cables that all test good on HD and 4K monitors including clean feed from DR18 when connected directly from Mac Studio to monitor.

I followed install manual to letter as far as I can tell but I'm hoping I'm missing a setting... or something.

-Installed Desktop Video 12.4.2 (allowed MacOS Security Prefs to install)> then rebooted.
-Desktop Video sees UltraStudio Monitor 3G.
-Resolve prefs for Video I/O> Monitor device: UltraStudio Monitor 3G is available and selected, saved pref. then rebooted DR.
-Project Settings> Master Settings> Video Monitoring: 1080p24 (also tried 1080p30).

I've searched the forum but the UltraStudio posts I see don't address my situation.

Thanks!
Robert

Does anyone have experience setting up the UltraStudio Monitor 3G?

I can only say that the same device is working fine for me with my M1 laptop.
Did you try a another monitor? HDMI can be finicky. The only other difference is my OS.

I'm going to take the UltraStudio Monitor 3G home and see if I can get it to work on another monitor. Will let let you know how it goes.

Did you ever get this resolved? I seem to be having the same issue...

Everything looks good just not getting picture to my Flanders monitor...

I'm using SDI.

Try another HDMI cable.
If your monitor won’t hold a calibration LUT, you might consider investing in a BMD Bi-directional converter 12G, or similar.
This can be used as a LUT box to carry calibration for your clean feed monitor. (The 3G out is direct from resolve and skips any MacOS display calibration profiles). It provides both HDMI and SGI input and output. This means you can also use SGI to connect to your ultra studio 3G.

Actually just figured it out- knew it was something silly!

You have to go to Preferences > Video and Audio I/O > Monitor Device > choose UltraStudio Monitor 3G.

Hope this helps anyone else who runs into this!

Was away for a few days and just tried this with a monitor at home, and it seems to work. I took the entire system home, Mac Studio, all the cables, etc, so the monitor in my office appears to be the culprit.

It seems that the monitor in my studio and UltraStudio 3G don't like each other. Using the HDMI out on the Mac Studio as a clean feed (with the same cable) to the monitor in question works fine.

Hello, I'm trying to get my Ultra Studio Monitor 3G to work on my Macbook Pro M2 (Ventura 13.0.1 and also tested Ventura 13.2.1) to no avail. I've installed DesktopVideo 12.2 and I'm currently using 12.4.2. I've enabled the appropiate System Extension each time.

The device is properly connected as shown in System Report:
UltraStudio Monitor 3G:

Vendor Name: Blackmagic Design
Device Name: UltraStudio Monitor 3G
Mode: Thunderbolt 3
Device ID: 0xA154
Vendor ID: 0x4
Device Revision: 0x1
UID: 0x00041E3C6D114400
Route String: 1
Firmware Version: 20.4
Port (Upstream):
Status: Device connected
Link Status: 0x2 / 0x7
Speed: Up to 20 Gb/s x2
Current Link Width: 0x1
Link Controller Firmware Version: 0.31.0

Any help appreciated, thank you.

Hi Everyone,

I seem to have this issue to.
I'm on my M2 Mac connected via thunderbolt.

My EIZO sees the the signal but there's no image being put through.
The mini monitor is on and outputting on both SDI and HDMI. I've confirmed that the cables all work by plugging into different devices.

The issue is that clean feed out or monitor selection isn't even an option in DaVinci with the UltraStudio 3G connected. However if I go via just the thunderbolt port it allows the clean feed out, that's without the 3G Monitor.

Interestingly in video I/O my output device is greyed out. However, in audio I'm able to send audio via the 3G monitor.

This seems very odd and not sure why I can't get a signal to my monitor. I've also tried multiple monitors. And I've had no luck getting an image. I've set my timeline and monitoring settings to 1080P 60FPS and this is matched on the 3G monitor in the software.

Having a very similar problem, where no matter what I try I can't fix or get closer to figuring out what I'm doing wrong.

I have the US3G connected and working with Desktop Video Setup but mac os can't see the monitor that the US3G is plugged into.

I can get Davinci Resolve and Premiere to output to the monitor but thats it. Maybe I'm missing something and when using a US3G or similar piece of hardware you can't regularily use monitors for like web search or YouTube etc... Is that it? Once your monitor is plugged into a US3G or something similar it only will work with editing/coloring software?

That seems crazy, also haven't read anything along those lines anywhere either.

Working with M1 Max Macbook Pro - Ventura 13.2.1 and an EIZO cs2740.

Super overwelmed here haha. I appreciate any and all insights!

The ultrastudio provides an external monitor feed only for selected applications, not the Mac gui.
It’s inconvenient in some ways, but the reason is only those few professional video apps have the render engine capable of directly feeding a clean video signal to the ultrastudio and thus to the connected display.

In the case of other applications, including those intrinsic to the operating system, they rely on the operating systems render engine and the graphics card hardware output to send signal to an external display. So for these applications you will need a parallel cable to the display, and you will need to manually switch your displays input settings. For example: I have a dell connected by both the ultrastudio 3G to hdmi, and by display port. I switch inputs as necesary (cf. like switching a display input between a Mac and a PC).

It would be wonderful if BMD created a driver which could manage switching from OS content to Resolve content depending on user activity, but I guess that has a low priority, or is problematic given how obsessive Apple and Microsoft are about OS security.

These thunderbolt devices are not an external graphic card.
The applications like Resolve et al sends a raw data stream over thunderbolt to them and they convert that into HDMI with proper values.

And as the macOS do not have any drivers or such built in functionality it’s unable to produce any data stream or video. Even though it can detect and identify the ultra studio as a thunderbolt device.

Awesome!

Massively appreciative of you both for clarifying this.

It's a huge weight lifted off busy shoulders hahaha.

All the best!

I just registered on this site only to say THANK YOU. This has been driving me crazy and even spending an hour with BMD Tech support couldn't fix it. Can't believe they wouldn't know that!

They know and may just have assumed you already tried it.
Recently, it didn't work for some on recent Mac systems in spite of the right setting.
