Analog tape conversion

PostTue Jan 24, 2023 10:14 am

Hello,
I aspire to start a digitization project for my old analog tapes.
I have a dedicated video deck player. It has PL outputs (composite).
I am using a mackbook pro laptop.
What do you think is the best setup for capturing the video and converting it to digital format?

Thanks,
Dana

We just use a Blackmagic Hyperdeck Shuttle HD for digitizing, and set it to whatever standard we need. Generally, you get fewer artifacts if you stay in the same frame rate (29.97, etc.) as the original:

It's an amazing little device. If you're coming from analog (like VHS or Betacam), you'll need a device that goes from analog composite video to digital, like a Teranex Mini. There are also cheaper NTSC/PAL analog -> SDI adapters out there.

If your analog source material is not giving a clean enough signal, you may need a time base corrector in the chain for digitization. There are a lot of posts on this subject if you search the forum.

And quite a few professional TBCs can be found second-hand. With a bit of patience, they can be sold again without much loss when the job is done.
No, an iGPU is not enough, and you can't use HEVC 10 bit 4:2:2 in the free version.

If I understand correctly, Sony SVO-5800 deck has inherent TBC mechanism.
If I have, in addition, a Hi-8 player, can I connect it to the SVO-5800, so it will use its TBC for digitation?

Most of the cheap built-in TBCs are line TBCs, not full-frame TBC.

Can I "chain" a Hi-8 player to a SVO-5800P deck, to use its TBC?
