BMD should at least be presenting dvr 19 so 18.5 should be around the corner among other things

We have had NAB's before where all that came out was a .5 release. I think that happened with 14.5 (but I could be confused). Sometimes they wait until IBC in the fall for a full new release.

Who can remember? I know there was an actual manual for 14.3, but not sure after that. I'd love to see a full "Version List" for all of Resolve going back to v6.0. I actually had some experience on 6 at a couple of LA post houses, but didn't buy it until 7 or so. 12 came out in summer 2015, but the timeline gets blurry after that.

Also interesting that the public beta period for 18 was four times shorter than the earlier versions.

For major versions we don't know if they're aiming for the old once a year release cycle or the ≈600 days release cycle of the last two major releases.

If they have a public beta of 19 at NAB it would be an unusally short release cycle of 295 days. It still might happen of course, but they've never done it before.

It's also been almost 10 years since they last upgraded to a new major version without releasing a .2 version first.

I don't think that's fair. I think their cameras sell very well, and clearly there's a market for low-cost (under $3000) switchers and so on. There's a market for all this stuff, even if it's not Resolve-specific.

Absolutely shocked the hell out of everybody walking into the Blackmagic Booth at NAB that year. Going from $200,000+ to under $50K was a bit surprising...

The new 6k Studio camera looks great, except for the lens situation. If BMD would be able to partner up with some lens manufacturers and present good servo zoom lenses that would be a huge thing.
And the new Atem features sound very useful and well thought out.

In my area a lot of event companies have replaced their older Sony cameras and Roland/Datavideo/Panasonic video switchers with products from Blackmagic.

So it might be you who does not want these products, but you and me are not the only client base.

That's a fair point, but theres a logic to hoping to see a Resolve 19 announcement at NAB 2023.
Resolve versions 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13*, 14, 15 and 16 were all announced at NAB over successive years from 2010 to 2019, roughly following the traditional 'announce at NAB, ship at IBC' pattern... but in 2020 the pandemic had come along. For 2+ years the world went into lockdown, dev/release schedules went completely out the window, trade shows were cancelled etc. Had the ability or the need to hit a 'big reveal date' still existed, Resolve 17's eventual Nov 2020 reveal would probably have been much earlier. Same for 2021. By 2022, things were looking a bit saner, and once again, Resolve's next big update announcement (the v18 reveal) was timed to coincide with NAB. So now we've got 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13*, 14, 15, 16 and 18 all announced at NAB, with a blip for Covid where the cycle slipped to 18 months for 2 releases.
Obviously theres no way to guess whether BMD will want to stick with an 18 month release cycle for Resolve going forward... but its probably worth noting that competitors like Adobe are sticking with a yearly update cycle.

* Yes, I'm aware that v13 never was... it was released as '12.5' :)

Since they threw iPadOS into the mix it will be interesting to see if the iPadOS version has any effect on the overall release cycle, given it's still catching up in terms of planned features.

Here is what I would love to see from BMD:

(Won't comment on Resolve or Fusion because reasons)

Blackmagic announces that they have joined the L-Alliance and introduces a new line of L-mount cameras including:

A new Full Frame box-shape style camera, 12K, up to 240 fps for 4K, 120 for 8K. Improved gyro/motion metadata options and a new Blackmagic Color version. In addition, the cameras feature improved AI-assisted compression for better results with higher BlackmagicRAW compression settings.

Slight price adjustments for the entire existing line with the original Blackmagic Pocket 4K now offered at $999 and the 6K Pro at $2399.

A new line of OLED Grading monitors (27" and 32") aggressively priced with factory calibration to rec2020 (which will be debated as nauseam) but a rock solid rec709.

Slight price adjustments for the Ultrastudio line and the Video Assist line.

An unexpected entry into the sports/action/crash cam field with a small fixed-lens 6K camera GoPro-style that can be mounted on drones and helmets, but with the added advantage of recording in BlackmagicRAW and gyro/stabilization metadata.

The near real time editing of switched feed (albeit only 8 isos and H264 recordings) with the Atems is definitely interesting.

Hoping they'll expand that out to include growing files, recording to broadcast codecs. You have to think that parts of the EVS market must be of interest to them.

I've been told on several occasions that Reference Grading Displays is not a market that BMD wants to be involved with.

On the other hand, now that they're making hundreds of millions a year and selling a vast array of products... anything is possible.

That is unfortunate as I do think there is a market gap that Blackmagic could step into. Basically somewhere between the LG OLED panels that one can buy at BestBuy and the, IMHO, outrageously overpriced panels that FSI sells.

Anyway, I do hope that they will consider stepping into that market since, for all intents and purposes, they would have a complete ecosystem all the way to final delivery, as well as being able to further solidify the Resolve user base by providing some "special sauce" between their panels and Resolve.


But I suspect you're right and we won't see anything of that sort anytime soon.

There is no "special sauce" between Resolve and any panel out there. The specs of the panel are completely independent of Resolve, and they should be. Resolve outputs the color it has...period.

FSI panels are so expensive because they can meet the specs demanded for professional work. The LG OLED monitors get us about 90% there, and in many ways they have become the "go-to" panel for those of us that grade for most anything except for feature film distribution, with some exceptions.

I don't see BMD getting into this space because of the LG OLED option. They could not compete with the mass production of them. However I really do wish they would upgrade their Smartview 4K monitors and software and give us more options.

I think you misunderstood what I meant. A tightly integrated hardware/software ecosystem would allow for communication protocols directly from within Resolve to the panel and back without the user needing to access any of the panel's buttons. This would be similar to how, for instance, Pro Tools can directly adjust gain and other functions for AVID i/o interfaces from within the software.

Regarding FSI's dominance, the more tech calibration professionals I speak to, the more they reveal that it's all a bunch of overhyped/pverpriced nonsense -- but good luck explaining that to someone who just dropped $6,000 on one of their products.

Regarding LG's dominance, I wouldn't expect Blackmagic to sell me a 77" panel as cheaply as COSTCO does for an LG. Any news… at today them did the story, may be the time like atem to add some key or to have speed editor mark 2 to work more in edit and others panel?

and add 3D elements ....based on the LIDAR Tracking

makes more sense to sell 1M copies at 300 than 300 copies at 200k :D
