Playback of Hyperdeck media on Windows Media Player

PostTue Jan 14, 2014 2:10 am

What challenges am I likely to face playing back Hyperdeck media
directly & smoothly with a mid range i5 PC using Vista or W7 Windows Media Player?

Do the record formats require a *very* fast access to the SSD?
I'm concerned about the universality of the codecs and hassels getting them supported by
media player as well as required read transfer performance.

I have a USB3.0 dock which I would like to use with the SSDs from the Hiperdeck,
but I am leery of USB3.0 as I've clocked read rates on one computer
as low as 30MB/s and another machine 60MB/s. I thought I'd see something close my SSD drive's
SATAII interface saturation rate... 300MB/. At least 100BM/s for sure!

So should I plan on a SATA drive bay instead?
(Unfortunate if so as the interface requires MB support for hot swap)

Thanks in advance for the advise!

Wow just coming back to video production and see that my post from 2014 never ever got one reply.
Very comforting.
not.

So you came back after 7 years to complain that no users answered your kind of generic questions in their spare time? And you also didn’t care enough to answer your own post with the things you have learned afterwards so other users looking for answers might find a solution?

Yes, that's about it except I didn't have anything to add.
I checked back a few times back in the day. Without any guidance I wasn't going to
chance recommending that the studio buy a Hyperdeck and not having it work out for
playback on their PCs. During that time there were numerous reports of issues with black magic
encoders running of the new 3.0 USB, only certain motherboards working, etc.
I stopped working in video shortly thereafter.
I had heard recent complaints that problems were not getting attention on the board
so that was my mindset when I checked back on my old post.
I got good response on a recent post I made, so kudos to the current participants.

Thank you. I apologize for reviving this with the negative tone. It was bad form.

Windows Media Player won't play Hyperdeck files.
You need "better" player. WMP is for "kids, wives and husbands" :D
VLC, MPC-HC, PotPlayer, Switch etc.
Properly working USB3 should be fine to play HD ProRes, DNxHR.
You need guaranteed eg. 70MB/sec+ to cover all HD frame rates and have reliable playback.
