Need a new Mac to edit a Feature using BRaw Q0

PostSun Mar 12, 2023 1:14 pm

Film world I have just completed a feature using the BMPCC 4k shooting BRaw on Q0. I have a Mac mini 2012 8GB system which obviously cannot handle what I have.

Would you be able to Direct me to the best operating system or what Mac minis or Mac pros would you recommend for editing a full feature. Note I do have a Multiple 4TB externals I use for backup and editing on. What kind of specs should I k for?

Actually, a Mac mini can handle BRAW, it's not such demanding codec. Not that I seriously recommend it for a huge project.
If you don't insist on portability and MacOS, at this point in time I'd rather suggest a good desktop PC with a strong GPU like the 4090, judging by value for money.
Right now, there's no Mac Pro, only rumours that one might be coming in March. It'll cost you massive $$$ for sure.
If you'd like to stay on MacOS, the Mac Studio with as many graphics cores as you can afford and at least 32 GB RAM will be a good choice. Don't waste money on huge internal SSDs, you can always work with external ones connected by Thunderbolt.

I just want to chime in that when shooting a feature narrative, unless you have scenes that needed to be composited, shooting at Q0 is unnecessary. I would use either Q1 or more likely Q3 which is more than good enough. If I have to use Q0, then I would only use it on scenes that needs it. I know the OP have already shot in Q0. I am just sharing this for others or future feature projects based on experiences.

Is it possible to “transcode” or crosscode one’s footage from Q0 to Q3?

Well that’s unfortunate. Hope they add such a facility.
