usb4 playback support would be nice

PostFri Oct 20, 2023 2:17 am

Am I the only one that would like to see playback hardware with USB4 support?

DeckLinks require free PCIe lanes, and those are getting really hard to find on anything less than threadripper on an epic based workstation, and you don't really need a machine that powerful anymore for editing.

The ultraStudios all use thunderbolt 3.

With some many motherboards available with usb4(equivalent to thunderbolt 3) now, and usb4 2.0 just over the horizon, it seems like BM needs to get something into that segment of the market.

something like an UltraStudio Monitor with HD & 4k support, but connected to the machine via Usb instead of thunderbolt. A native DisplayPort would be an added bonus.

This would be very handy. I've just got hold of a 5090 which is 2.5 slots wide and has gobbled up access to my second PCIe slot meaning I have nowhere to put my Decklink 4k Extreme 12G. For the time being I am falling back to an old Intensity card but I used to playback issues at 4k with that. The Ultrastudio 4k Mini looks like a great option for me if only it had usb4 support.

USB4 is not equivalent to TB3.

It may offer similar bandwidth but there are limitations inherent to the USB protocol which make it less ideal for media transport than is Thunderbolt, regardless of the number behind it - there are people who are sensitive to issues with timing jitter caused by transporting even just MIDI over USB (and even USB 1.1 has enough bandwidth for MIDI).

This issue is independent of the bandwidth of the connection as it is related to the manner in which the underlying protocol stack works.

It might be possible to get "good enough" performance for something like this out of USB4, but the timing characteristics of the connection are not ideal for a professional real-time video/media transport.

BM had a USB3 UltraStudio device previously. It worked just fine. I don’t see why a USB4 version would not.

Beware using 'USB4' as if it defines a single connectivity standard - it defines a bunch of standards - some of them are optional. USB4 can include Thunderbolt compatibility for example - but doesn't have to.

It's a bit of a mess to be honest - which is why I can see BMD might be avoiding putting 'USB4' labelled ports on their devices that may not work when plugged into every port on a PC labelled 'USB4'.
