Cintel G3 HDR+ - Bit Depth

PostTue Mar 12, 2024 3:34 pm

Hi all,

We've just received our Cintel G3 HDR+, having used the Cintel G2 in the past, and following various tests, we have a question.
In the case of a scan in normal or HDR mode, only the weight of the CRI file differs (around 12.5MB in normal and 14.5MB in HDR), which seems to be in line with what is specified in the "intallation and operational manual" of November 2022.
However, in the CRI file's metadata, it says "Bit Depth: 16" whereas in the manual it says: "The Cintel Raw Format Bayer pattern of each film frame scanned with your Cintel scanner's sensor is saved with embedded scanner metadata as a 12-bit linear Cintel Raw Image, or CRI, image sequence".
Is this a metadata error or are we missing something ?

For information, our tests were carried out in Cintel Raw, 24fps, 4096x3072
Thank you for your feedback,
Nicolas

It might be 12-bit in a 16-bit container. Meaning, that the last 4 bits are empty.
Maybe a BM tech can clarify.

Hi Dom,

Thanks for your answer, I thought of this option but have no way to verify !
Hope to get an answer from BMD or somebody who is able to make a test ...
Best,
Nicolas

Hi Nicolas,

The Scanner saves a 12bit Linear + metadata .cri file; Resolve process workflow is 16bit Log, so reads the file and encodes the 12bits Linear to 16bits Log accordingly. Which subject to final deliverables may get further transformed.
