Desktop Video 12.8.1 fails to install on Win 11

PostTue Apr 09, 2024 1:08 pm

Hi, I'm using Windows 11 (23H2 Build 22631.3374) and I'm trying to install Desktop Video 12.8.1 to use my DeckLink Mini Monitor 4k in Davinci, but without success.

The installer fails after copying the files with the error:
There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A
program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected.
Contact your support personnel or package vendor.

Error in windows event viewer:
Product: Blackmagic Desktop Video -- Error 1722. There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected. Contact your support personnel or package vendor. Action RegisterDirectShowFilters32Action.B4AF8F71_B84D_453E_8241_2860184F17C0, location: C:\Program Files (x86)\Blackmagic Design\Blackmagic Desktop Video\, command: regsvr32 /s DeckLink.dll

I tried enabling "Legacy Componentes / DirectPlay" from windows features, installed newest VC_redist runtimes, tried uninstalling the driver from my DeckLink Mini Monitor 4k in device manager, tried Desktop Video 12.8 (also 12.7.1) - but nothing works.

This user had the same issue back in 2018 with windows 7:
viewtopic.php?f=18&t=76636&p=424620&hilit=Error+1722#p424620

Please let me know if you need more infos to debug this issue.

Thanks!

Working fine here on Win 11, same build I think. Try restoring your PC to the last known good working implementation of DV. Then completely un-install that one, before updating again. You shouldn't need to mess with anything else, something has gone awry with your Windows settings.

I never had a working state, so there is no restore point I can go back to. Tbh, this is a fairly new install. Not event a month since a complete fresh install.

I tried with the newly released desktop video 12.9. as well. Won't install.

- Tried booting in save mode to remove all drivers and registry keys
- Deleted every Blackmagic related folder on my drive

I even tried killing the installer process in task manager once it fails to prevent a roll back (which leaves the programs installed). Running the uninstaller from desktop video afterwards results in the same error.

Sorry to hear about the trouble.

Any EDR/antivirus system on your machine?

Reading through your posted links revealed one user solvning it by reinstalling/updating Visual C++ package and some other post about running the commands:
msiexec /unregister
msiexec /regserver
and reboot which might solve the error.

Perhaps you have already done that?

I installed the lastest c++ runtime from here:
https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/cpp/w ... w=msvc-170

I tried that but unfortunately it didn't help either. However, thanks for the suggestion.

I contacted blackmagic support yesterday, but they havn't responded so far.

I tried installing it from the command line to get some debug logs.
I ran
Code: Select all
msiexec.exe /i 'C:\Users\max\Downloads\Blackmagic_Desktop_Video_Windows_12.9\Desktop Video Installer v12.9.msi' /l*v install.log

Which resulted in this log: https://gist.github.com/seriousm4x/b1ba ... 692e8d267a

I wasted too many hours on this. I went for a complete windows reinstall and it fixed the issue.

But very annoying!
