UltraStudio Monitor 3G Video Device Not Detected

I am running a Mac Mini Pro M2 with Sonoma 14.6.1. I am using Blackmagic Desktop Video 14.2.1. When I open the program Desktop Video Setup, it informs me, “No Desktop Video Device Detected.”
Steps to troubleshooting and did not correct the problem:
- I followed the manual and allowed System Extension in the Security tab “App Store and identified developers.”
- I also changed the security setting on my Mac's startup disk to “Reduced Security.”
I am running a Thunderbolt 4 cable from my mini to the 3G
My question is, does the Monitor 3G only work with Thunderbolt 3 cable, or what do I need to do to get it to work?
Thank you for your time.

Hello,
I have the same trouble with my Macbook M1 (Sonoma 14.6.1 + DVS 14.2.1) with the Ultrastudio Recorder 3G.
I've followed the same steps to correct it but it didn't work.
The recorder is recognized by the system but not in Desktop video setup app.
Does anyone have any advice on how to solve this problem?
Thanks a lot in advance !

Same issue with M1 Ultra Sequoia 15.0.1. Mac System Info sees the device:
- Code: Select all
Vendor Name: Blackmagic Design
Device Name: UltraStudio Monitor 3G
Mode: Thunderbolt 3
Desktop Video Setup does not see the device. It was working before, but I don't use it often enough to know when it stopped working.
Plugged the same device and cable into my MacBook from 2019 (Sonoma 14.6.1) and it works fine.

My Monitor 3G was visible running Desktop Video 14.2 on my Mac mini M1 standard and Sequoia 15.0.1.
Ran the uninstaller. Installed 14.2.1.
Was asked to accept the Desktop Video Driver Extension.
Allowed it to be launched in macOS launch and extensions settings.
Rebooted and Desktop Video detected the Monitor 3G this tine as well.
I'm running the Monitor 3G through a OWC powered TB3 hub.

For me it helped to install 12.1 Desktop Video or 12.9 and then there was a Terminal command that copies the kexts to the right place

Did anyone solve this problem without having to erase their computer?
I can not get this laptop to see my ultrastudiomonitor 3G:
macbok air, M1, sonoma 14.6.1
But I can use it on this laptop:
macbook pro intel i5, monterey 12.7.7
I have:
reinstalled and installed desktop video
12.7.1
12.9
14.2.1
none work
I have davinci resolove studio 19.1 installed
If anyone has any ideas I would love to hear them
Many thanks

Hi folks, just went through the troubleshooting steps on a Mac Studio M1, running Sonoma and ver 14.4 of Blackmagic Desktop Video. Tech support was able to resolve the matter for me. Here's a quick summary.
1. Un-installed the driver software (if installed)
2. Restart
3. Re-install from the .dmg
4. During the installation process Open Security Settings and click "allow" or toggle the "on" switch at each prompt.
5. Restart
6. If the device isn't recognized when you launch the Blackmagic Desktop Video app, first do a quick system check.
7. Open Apple -> About this Mac -> More Info -> General -> System Report -> Hardware -> Thunderbolt and confirm that the UltraStudio Monitor 3G is showing up as connected. If it's not, call tech support because it might be a hardware issue. If it's connected go to the next step
8. Go to System Settings -> General -> Login Items & Extensions
9. Look for Blackmagic Design Desktop Video. If it's "on", toggle it "off" (input password), then back "on".
10. Scroll down to Extensions, look for "Driver Extensions", with the one showing "com.blackmagic-design.BlackmagicIO.DExt", click the (i) button to the right.
11. Toggle Blackmagic Desktop Video Driver Extension.app to "on"
12. You might get an "update" device message. This is GOOD. Hit update and let it run through. If you don't then just skip ahead. If you do, follow the instructions, part of which will be to unplug your device and reconnect.
13. Re-launch the Blackmagic Desktop Video app, it should show up correctly.
14. If you don't see the device try restarting one more time.
I hope that helps!
Stephen

I’ve been using Black Magic products for video capture on my Mac for about seven years and the driver installation has always been a nightmare. Wonder why they can’t sort this out?

The process itself is related to apples security approach.
But BMD could explain it a bit better - so could Apple.
The process might enhance the security but it’s defined as smooth as it should be.

Have there been any updates on this? Recently got a new MacBook Pro (M4 Pro) and it came with Sequoia 15.2 preinstalled. Have been unable to get either a Monitor 3G or older Mini Monitor to show up in Desktop Video. Blackmagic support led me through the steps on this page, but no luck!
I should add that I see the Ultrastudio Monitor 3G is connected when I go into System Report and look under Thunderbolt devices, but the indicator light on the unit doesn't turn on. Also, the version of Desktop Video I have installed is 14.4.
Thanks!

I tried the above fixes and nothing, but then I came across this one that worked for me:
viewtopic.php?f=3&t=212141"1. Removed the "Blackmagic Desktop Video Driver Extension" under the Driver section.
Click the three dot button and choose "Delete Extension"
https://support.apple.com/en-gb/guide/m ... usr003/mac
2. Some of these Agents and Daemons was not properly deleted during the Unistall.
So I manually delete the LaunchDaemons and LaunchAgents
/Library/LaunchAgents/...
com.blackmagic-design.DesktopVideoUpdater.plist
com.blackmagic-design.DesktopVideoDriverExtension.plist
com.blackmagic-design.DesktopVideoDriverExtensionRemove.plist
/Library/LaunchDaemons/...
com.blackmagic-design.DesktopVideoHelper.plist
com.blackmagic-design.DesktopVideoDriverExtension.Helper.plist
3. Ran the Uninstall Desktop Video.app
4. Rebooted
5. Reinstalled Desktop Video Setup 14.2.1
6. Reboot and Authorised the Extension (or if it was the other way around)
7. Launched Desktop Video Setup
8. Connected the 3G Recorder and after a few second it was identified by the Desktop Video Setup
Disconnected it and treid the 3G Monitor instead and with a few seconds the Monitor device was identyfied as well.

"
I hope this helps.

My UltraStudio Monitor 3G Video Device used to be recognized perfectly every time I'd upgrade to BlackMagic Video software or when i upgraded MacOs.
Not this time unfortunately! I upgraded to MacOS 15.3 and upgraded the BlackMagic video software to 14.4.1 and after several installation and reboot, the device is still not recognized.
I see the Ultrastudio Monitor 3G is connected when I go into System Report and look under Thunderbolt devices, and the indicator light on the device is ON..
I checked the Extensions list but in MacOS 15.3 i can't see an item Driver Extensions

Nothing worked so I bought an Elgato HD60X and it worked out-of-the-box without installing anything.

I might be missing something here, but the Elgato is a capture card and the Ultrastudio Monitor 3G is the opposite.
The Monitor 3G is an external display device to drive monitors with a clean and true signal.

The Elgato devices are just UVC (USB Video Class) compliant and should work without any additional drivers with every modern machine. See here about the issues with such devices, primarily made for gamers:

thank you for your article but I did not find anything that talked about the issues with the HD60X vs the BlackMagic recorder. I know the BB device is of better quality and it worked fine until now.

I was reacting to Petter's post.
If the advice given by AtomicKid doesn't help, I'm out of ideas. It worked here.

I am currently running into this issue when trying to connect my LG OLED42"C4 using my Ultrastudio Mini Monitor 3G.
Mac Specs: 2.5GHz 14-Core Intel Xeon W running Sonoma 14.4.1
I've tried the reinstall and uninstall with no luck. Seeing AtomicKids resopnse gave me hope but I'm running into an issue.
For this part I can do the "Login items" and toggle BMD Desktop off then on again but I cannot find anything that says "extensions" or "driver extensions".
I fear I may be missing something very obvious but I cannot find access to those driver files anywhere.
Any insight would be much appreciated.

Did you read my article?
What I described there has been working for 15 machines in our lab.
