New PC Build Spec Review Requested

PostTue Apr 08, 2025 4:59 pm

Hey all. Can you review the system specs and let me know if this will be "good enough" before I pull the trigger?

AMD Ryzen 9 9950X 4.30GHz processor, 64GB RAM, NVidia GeForce RTX 5070 12GB graphics card.
Also, 2 SSD's: 2 & 4 TB for OS and Video work (I often have 2-3 projects in the post-production pipeline).

This is a big spend for us and I want to be sure it's the right investment. My primary concern is GPU, especially as related to the CPU: is the CPU/memory overkill compared to the GPU? Should I look to downgrade the CPU and upgrade the GPU?

Background:

I'm a 1-man show, doing all capture and postproduction for my wife's company. Producing predominantly 1-3 minute talking head, brand, and sizzle videos for clients as well as photography (Lightroom & Photoshop). My laptop meets Davinci minimum requirements, so I'm working with 1/4 res proxies, but Davinci is still slow. I spend a lot of time waiting for proxies to render for smooth cuts, titles, and transitions. There's a lot I cannot do on the Color page (magic masks) because it's too slow and often crashes.

We finally hit the stage where it's time to upgrade my computer to something specialized for video editing. Budget is around $3k. Do not want to leave Windows ecosystem.

Currently, I'm all Edit, Color, and Fairlight. My current PC can't handle Fusion, so I haven't done much there, but expect that once my PC can, I will learn to make better lower thirds graphics and intro/outro clips for the videos we produce (currently using Canva and Videobolt). I also have a 12TB NAS for storage (I'm currently working off that because my laptop SSD is too small).

One friend suggested that the CPU may be sitting idle a lot especially if the GPU does most of the heavy lifting. I don't want to go more than another $200 over this budget, so any changes need to be reciprocal (ie: downgrading CPU pays for upgrading GPU).

Here's the guts of what he recommended (not including case, power supply, cooler, peripherals, etc):

1. AMD Ryzen 9 9950X Granite Ridge AM5 4.30GHz 16-Core Boxed Processor
2. MSI X870E MAG TOMAHAWK WIFI AMD AM5 ATX Motherboard
3. Corsair VENGEANCE RGB 64GB (2 x 32GB) DDR5-6000 PC5-48000 CL30 Dual Channel Desktop Memory Kit CMH64GX5M2M6000Z30 (1-3 are discounted as a bundle)
4. Gigabyte NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 WINDFORCE SFF Overclocked Triple Fan 12GB GDDR7 PCIe 5.0 Graphics Card

THANK YOU so much!

The GPU should be the bigger investment if we are discussing Resolve.
That being said, the 5070 is a great card. 12GB will be fine for HD, even in UHD (but not always). I think 5070ti with 16GB is a better choice.

CPU is overkill I would say (7950 will be also ok). Save on it and get better GPU.
I assume you prefer PC otherwise I would go Mac.

Tbh all of it is rather overkill, but if you have money it will last.
Probably spending half this money would still be fine.
