DIT Timecode Sync Issue

PostSun May 25, 2025 3:12 am

I have been dealing with this issue recently (or have just noticed) where the timecode is off by one frame consistently between slate/sound and camera. Not sure what’s causing this and it’s driving me nuts. I understand I can do an offset and everything should be fine but I want to know what could be causing this and stop this from happening on future productions.

Our sound person for the current production I'm on found a work around which is attaching another timecode box into the audio recorder. That seems to fix the sync issue but visually camera timecode and slate timecode are still off a frame.

We are shooting in 23.98 (23.976) and using 2 FX6s and 1 FX3.

Anyone face this issue before or found why this happens? I added a screenshot below.

Thanks in advance.

Are the cameras tethered to the TC generator? Aka the camera is continually being fed TC.
I assume the clapper is sync’d once with a cable then disconnected? Or via wireless system?

Yes they are continually being fed TC and I'm not 100% sure with sound but I believe the slate is synced once with a cable then disconnected.

A 1-frame offset happens sometimes. If you want to be absolutely OCD about it, have them shoot a few tests and have the sound person (or whoever is providing the timecode) provide versions with a 0-frame offset, +1 frame offset, and a -1 frame offset, and see which works best.

If it were me, I would just fix it all manually and get on with life. when I was training dailies people, one of our mantras at Technicolor was, "the timecode just gets you close -- the slate clap will tell you if it's actually dead-on or not." I don't expect anything in post to be absolutely 100% perfect all the time -- I question everything.

Yeah, I agree with Marc — this is totally normal as far as I'm concerned. Always double-check the clap after TC sync and be prepared to sometimes have to manually slip by 1 or 2 frames. That's just part of the process of syncing.

Resolve has the best/fastest system for manually slipping synced sound I've ever used, except for maybe nextLAB. It only takes an extra second or two to check your work ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
