Background: Documentary workflow requiring UHD 50p source with HD 50i broadcast delivery. Currently using UltraStudio Mini Monitor 3G on MacBook Pro with Premiere Pro.
Current Challenge
Working in progressive timelines for performance (50i timeline destroys Mac performance), but need accurate interlaced monitoring for broadcast delivery QC. The Mini Monitor 3G handles UHD→HD progressive downsampling perfectly, but I need the next stage: HD progressive → HD interlaced conversion.
Hardware Research Findings
Mini Converter UpDownCross HD Investigation:
Found concerning forum posts from 2018 where users tested PAL to 1080i50 conversion and reported:
Output signal detected as 1080i50 ✓
But actual image "clearly looks like progressive" ❌
Comparison showed "UpDownCross frame is deinterlaced"
Has this interlacing issue been resolved in recent firmware? The 2018 post suggests it outputs progressive content wrapped in interlaced container rather than true field-based interlacing.
Proposed Daisy Chain Solution
MacBook Pro → UltraStudio Mini Monitor 3G → External Converter → Broadcast Monitor
Since the Mini Converter UpDownCross HD seems unreliable for true interlacing, I'm considering Decimator MD-HX (~$295) as the second stage converter. Forum posts here mention it's used successfully in ATEM installations for progressive→interlaced conversion.
Questions for BMD Community
Mini Converter UpDownCross HD Current Status: Has the progressive-only output issue been fixed in recent firmware updates? Can anyone confirm true interlaced field output in 2024/2025?
UltraStudio Integration: Any experience daisy-chaining UltraStudio devices with external converters? Timing/sync concerns?
Alternative BMD Solutions: Any other Blackmagic hardware that can handle progressive→interlaced conversion directly? (Budget constraints rule out high-end Teranex units)
Adobe Integration Issues: Noticed forum reports of interlacing problems with Premiere Pro 2024+ and Blackmagic hardware - anyone experiencing similar issues?
Technical Requirements
Current Setup: MacBook Pro + UltraStudio Mini Monitor 3G + Premiere Pro
Source: UHD or HD 50p documentary footage
Delivery: HD 50i European broadcast specs
Critical Need: True interlaced preview matching final export quality
Why This Matters
For broadcast delivery, I need to monitor interlacing artifacts in real-time - particularly interline twitter and aliasing when sharpening LOG footage. Progressive preview doesn't reveal these critical issues.
Has anyone successfully implemented a similar UltraStudio + external converter workflow for progressive→interlaced monitoring?
Particularly interested in:
Sync/timing stability in daisy chains
Color accuracy through conversion chain
Latency for real-time grading work
Thanks for any insights from your broadcast workflows!
