One of the most asked questions during my Resolve classes is why and how do we use an Offline/Reference movie. It is a little tricky so here is a quick tutorial

Another useful trick which i use a lot is to bring in my reference movie but not tell Resolve it is a reference movie so i can access it and use it in the timeline. Then I overlay it on the top layer say for example V4 and set the composite to soft light or screen. This allows me to see it composited over my online conform in the Color Room which is nice when you have a lot of repos for easy sizing changes. I also find it quicker sometimes than having to tell Resolve the clip is a reference movie and then having to adjust the timecode and all the other steps to get it into the wipe mode in the viewer. Of course this option is good for an onion skinning type view only but I've found it quite useful and fast along with the traditional method Warren outlines so well in his tutorial.

Nice one Mike, do you just disable that track when you don't need to reference it anymore?
Or do you delete the track?

Hi Warren,

I will usually just disable the track in case there is any discrepancy about the conform. That way i can easily turn it back on and show the client their reference versus our conform. As I'm sure you know far too well, often times what your clients remember from there edit isn't exactly what they have but being able to refer to the reference movie quickly puts all questions to bed
