Resolve Live, on set preview keying

PostMon Sep 29, 2014 6:27 am

Hi,
Is it possible to use Resolve live for green screen preview keying on set ?
Using the qualifier you can select the green but it's not possible to use a
background track of clips.
It would be a very useful tool to setup lighting and camera angles.

thanks

Add an alpha output to the clip you're qualifying/keying and link the HSL qualifier's alpha to it - then just drag your background clips under the chroma key in the edit tab.

That work's in normal mode but in live mode file sources seem to be excluded.
It may not be possible but would be a great on set tool when setting up key shots and lighting.
Resolve can do a surprisingly good key with spill suppression on another node.

Live mode would really only need to access a still Bg plate from the compositor.

I also need this, just the other way round. I have a foreground window (a TIFF image with transparency where the glass would be) which should lay over the live image. The only way it works at the moment is when I go into timeline mode and add a layer mixer node. The second input will be the the TIFF (added as matte) with a white window frame and transperancy for the glass. I set layer mixer to lighten and only the parts of the live video signal where the transparency lays shines through.

Does anybody have a solution where I can show the actual color of the window frame instead of white?

Can you add the window with alpha as another layer but use `normal' mode over the `lighten' layer.
You would need to enable `add alpha output' and patch the key signal to it.

You may need to make another tiff where the alpha ignores the glass transparency and only
cuts the frame.

I didn't know you could add FG layers in live mode, I want to add a BG layer :)

Hey all,

Replying to this old thread because of the same question. I don't get it to work, does anyone have an idea?

In the Resolve 15 manual (on page 2564 under More About Resolve Live it reads:
"Additionally, you can use Resolve Live in conjunction with other Color page features such as the Alpha output to build test composites to check green screen shots, comparing them against imported background images in order to aid camera positioning and lighting adjustments."

I don't get how to insert a background image as in live mode it's impossible to access the timeline.

Thanks

Once in Resolve Live you can create image files by "freezing"(using the button in the interface) the live feed and saving a still to the gallery. The files are stored as DPX files. The stills can be used as a foreground layer once live mode is quit. That way you can composite let's say a foreground green screen layer on top of a background layer on-set for the director or producer...It works but it is not ideal. I want to be able to do this in live-mode so that the talent can interact live with the new background or any composited elements that need to be introduced...Does anybody know if NUKE or any compositing software programs can composite live footage with other files?

By default Nuke does not have live feed input but one can code it with sdk. It is possible to do a constantly updating plugin (nuke has for example arnold plugin with progressive update in viewer), in sdk there is a “socket” example plugin which demonstrates a timer based updating node. The speed might not be realtime though, due to Nuke engine architecture. You could try doing a softeffect for timeline side too, but I’m not sure if updating works there, probably will.
