XDCAM EX Footage

PostWed Aug 29, 2012 3:46 am

HI,
Working along fine with the lite version of Resolve and cant wait till the delivery of my pre-ordered camera to get the full version of Resolve.
Is it true that Resolve cant work with XDCAM EX files native? and / or will the full version accept these file types?
Other than re-encoding all of my XDCAM EX files (before i begin any edit) into say Pro-res, is there any other work around to get the footage into resolve via an EDL export from Premiere pro?

Thanks

You can work with XDCAM EX footage if it's in a QuickTime wrapper and only on a Mac with the proper XDCAM EX codecs installed.

So, if you have FCP then you'll have the XDCAM EX QT codec and Resolve will be able to use it.

You'll have to use either XDCAM Browser or FCP7 to re-wrap native MP4 XDCAM EX files to QuickTime in order for them to be compatible with Resolve.

If you're on Windows, you're out of luck. :(

This is one area where I wish Blackmagic would expand it's supported codec support. It would save me a lot of trouble if they supported XDCAM EX natively in it's .MP4 wrapper on both Mac and PC.

Thanks for the replies...Yes it would be great not to have to re-wrap the files.

While it's nicer to not have to transcode the files you'll find that any long GOP MPEG2 codec is a nightmare for editing and finishing

Alot of issues can be caused with XDCAM footage (both EX and HD) and you can also loose a bit of performance. I tend to advise customers to transcode on ingest using watch folders. Something like ProxyMill from Imagine works well for this

As colour grading is typically a final step I usually suggest people use it as a conforming step - conform all footage to a single common format (typically DNxHD 185). This has a number of benefits, among them is improved workflow into things like Resolve (it's also good for backup etc).

Use this utility from Sony. Works fast and is reliable.

FYI Sony software will only retain the native codec, not transcode to a proper intermediate i-frame codec suitable for finishing

However, you can always use Resolve to transcode the Quicktime Wrapped media into DPX sequences for the purposes of real-time grading.

To be clear, Resolve supports XDCAM EX files (with FCP7 installed) but only in .mov wrappers.

Resolve does not support XDCAM EX under Windows unless you have access to a Mac. You can't rewrap to MOV with the Windows version of Sony's Content Browser.

Resolve will not read the MXF wrapped output from Content Browser nor the native MP4 wrapped files.

So basically Resolve doesn't support XDCAM EX under Window currently without having a Mac or purchasing some third party software.

I was not under the impression that the OP was using a Windows system, although he did not explicitly specify. But you are correct in relation to Windows Resolve. Windows Resolve does not support XDCAM footage of any sort. Having a Mac would not help this, except for the fact that an FCP7 equipped Mac could transcode the footage to something a Windows Resolve could deal with, like DNxHD.
