Can I Get DaVinci Resolve To Work On My Macbook Pro?

PostSat Feb 09, 2013 2:15 am

Hi all...

I'm sure this has been asked about a thousand times, but I need a definite answer.
I've been seriously considering getting the BMCC, before I do I want to know that DaVinci Resolve will work on my system(s). I downloaded DR Lite and installed a few programs such as BM Desktop Video, RedRocket and CUDA. When I load up DaVinci Resolve I get "No OpenCL Acceleration Hardware Detected!".

My Mac specs:
Macbook Pro
13-inch, mid 2012
Processor 2.9 GHz Intel Core i7
Memory 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Graphics Intel HD Graphics 4000 512 MB
Software Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63b)

From what I've read it seems DaVinci Resolve isn't awfully fond of the 13 inch macs. Surely there has to be some software to download or hardware to buy to get this working. I'm a student so I don't exactly have the cash flowing in and everything I've saved is going toward the camera, so buying a new mac isn't really an option I can afford.
Please note that I'm not particularly tech savvy.

I also have an older Windows Laptop (running Vista), tried giving a go on there to but no luck, something about missing a component.

If anyone can help me that would be very much appreciated.

Cheers
Matt .D.

Unfortunately not. The resolve config guide is a good resource for understanding what resolve requires.

Your PC might give you a better shot, you need to make sure you have a CUDA capable gfx card installed. (Again the resolve config guide is a good resource) but basically a graphics card like a GTX570/580 that will allow you to open resolve, now as to the performance you can expect, that depends on many factors.

This is my P.C's specs:

OS Name MicrosoftÆ Windows Vista Home Premium
Version 6.0.6002 Service Pack 2 Build 6002
Other OS Description Not Available
OS Manufacturer Microsoft Corporation
System Manufacturer Hewlett-Packard
System Model HP Pavilion dv5 Notebook PC
System Type X86-based PC
Processor Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU P8400 @ 2.26GHz, 2267 Mhz, 2 Core(s), 2 Logical Processor(s)
BIOS Version/Date Hewlett-Packard F.14, 23/01/2009
SMBIOS Version 2.4
Windows Directory C:\Windows
System Directory C:\Windows\system32
Boot Device \Device\HarddiskVolume1
Locale Australia
Hardware Abstraction Layer Version = "6.0.6002.18005"
Installed Physical Memory (RAM) 2.00 GB
NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT

However when I try to install, before the installer even appears this message appears:
"no configuation matching locale and operating system found within 1 configuration(s)"

I've looked at the configuration guide, I'm gonna guess this p.c is too old to run the program.

Thanks for quick reply by the way...

That's a reaaaaaallly old PC. You may want to see what's available at school or what you can borrow from friends. Sorry.

You could still use the BMCC camera and shoot in Prores. If you are a student on a budget you'll not have the funds for the storage needed for shooting RAW anyway.

Shooting in Prores Film mode will still give you footage that is way higher quality than any 8bit camera or DSLR.

I have a similar 15-inch laptop, and it works fine for most purposes. It has a AMD Radeon HD 6770M 1024 MB however, as well as the Intel HD Graphics 3000.

Make sure you have "Automatic graphics switching" turned off in the "Energy Saver" Preferences.

The 13" MacBook Pro does not have the Duel Graphics card that is in the 15" and 17" MacBook Pros.

Yeah, unfortunately Resolve doesn't run on Intel integrated graphics at all. Otherwise, I would have bought a fully maxed out 2012 Mac Mini.

Hi again, thank you all for your support.

My friend has an:
iMac
21.5 inch, Mid 2012
AMD Radeon HD 6750M 512mb.

I also asked the coordinator at my school if she can load the program onto the editing suites, but it's not looking likely.
