Pink Video Image - Decklink 4K Extreme HDMI - PLEASE HELP!

PostWed Mar 06, 2013 5:40 pm

I think this issue could be cross-platform seeing as there is a BM 4k for both platforms.
However, I have a brand new MacPro w/ a new Decklink 4K Extreme card in it. I have Premiere, Resolve & Media Composer on it. It's an awesome machine.
Here's my issue, I am trying to get my external Sony LMD-2450W monitor to recognize the output signal via the BNC & the HDMI/DVI.
I have purchased a HDMI to DVI-D cable and get a pink video when viewing in the DVI setting on the monitor (no signal from anything else). Is there a setting for the DL 4K that I am missing? Anyone else have an external monitor viewing problem?
If you have solved or can solve this issue I'd love to hear how.

Thank you.

Hi Mike,

I think the problem you're having here is that because the input on the monitor is DVI, it is expecting an RGB colourspace. The HDMI port on the 4K Extreme is YUV colourspace only, so the monitor will not understand the signal correctly.

DVI and HDMI aren't completely cross-compatible. DVI is RGB only. HDMI inputs typically can accept both RGB and YUV colourspaces, but HDMI outputs will more often than not only output one or the other.

Looking at the monitor's specs you may be able to output analog component to it. Or alternatively we do have a solution for outputting to DVI monitors called HDLink Pro. This will take an SDI signal from the DeckLink card and convert to DVI.

Hi Chris,
that makes sense, though why they sell hdmi to dvi cables is beyond me. I thought I had found the solution since they are both digital signals.... but I was wrong.
I wish the card came with more documentation like a guide as to what all the connectors are and which are input and which are output and so on. Besides the horsetail of cables that are labeled, it took the guys at ProMax to tell me that there was an input hdmi and an output hdmi.
It would be great to have this stuff labeled.
Are all the BNC connectors on the back of the card outputs? There are 4 of them and what do they do? Can I just hook up one of them and get a signal?

And what is the cost of the HDLink?

Also, we have tried another monitor that has an HDMI input and it worked in the test yesterday, but when we tried it today it didn't display via HDMI and that was hdmi to hdmi.
Is there a setting on the card & in premiere & media composer that I should be checking or anything?

This is all Mac based.
Thanks again for the reply.

It's quite possible to go the other way around most of the time. So if you have an HDMI monitor, you can output from your graphics card from DVI into HDMI. HDMI just happens to be able to carry a DVI signal, where DVI devices don't typically understand HDMI signals.

There are two inputs and two outputs on the back of the card. You can find all the details of the card's I/O on page 53 of the manual included in the current Desktop Video driver download. If you are simply working with SD or HD or 2K, you can just use one output. Some higher HD formats and 2K can use Dual Link SDI, and 4K always uses Dual Link.

The HDLink Pro is 495USD. You can find more information on this here.

For HDMI output I don't think there's anything in the Blackmagic Control Panel you'll need to change. In Premiere Pro you will want to make sure that you have the Blackmagic option selected in the Player Preferences. And for Media Composer, Premiere etc. you will need to make sure that you're working in a format the monitor will accept. Not all monitors will accept all 1080p signals. If in doubt, please make a test with a 720p or 1080i signal, since all HD monitors should support these formats. You can also test using our Media Express software.
