R3D's appear black when using RED ROCKET

PostWed Mar 06, 2013 7:45 pm

My setup:

MBP - Echo Express Pro - Red Rocket - Promise Pegassus

In Redcine the rocket works normal.
When I open R3D files in Resolve (9.1.1), they appear black, thumbnails are grey.
If I disable the rocket in prefs, everything shows normal.

The rocket has the latest firmware/driver.

Any idea anyone? thanks!

I guess I could use the second slot in the Echo Express Pro but it's working just fine in Redcine,
doesn't that look more like a software issue?

In Resolve Preferences, does Resolve see the Red Rocket card? If so, what driver and firmware numbers is it reporting?

It sees the Rocket : Card 1 Driver: 1.4.32.0, Firmware 1.1.16.11

Today it generates the thumbnails correct but still nothing on the timeline.

So is this something Blackmagic will fix or is the problem just here?

We have not tested the Sonnet Echo Express Pro with Resolve, so have no direct experience of how well the Red Rocket card works in it. I thought a few users had reported success with it, and in Googling around to find details, a few users reported it works well for playing back r3d files in Resolve at Premium Half Res quality in realtime, but didn't help rendering speeds much. But it was working.

I see some reports of people saying it worked OK with OSX 10.8.1, but 10.8.2 broke it. But those were fall of last year. Not sure if newer Red drivers have addressed that.

My hope was someone on this forum who is using such a combination could chime in.

In the meantime, can you give us more specs of your system? What type of CPU and graphics? What OSX version? How much RAM?

Are you getting any error messages or warnings? With only 1GB of VRAM, that seems like it could be problematic with 4K Red files. What Resolve Timeline Resolution are you using?

You are not using Red Mono files, are you?

No error messages, just black frames, if I turned the option 'use red rocket' off it worked.

I just changed the red rocket to the other slot in the Sonnet Echo Express Pro and it works now.
It's just like in the mac pro :)
Thanks for the tips guys!

Now I get 2 fps without and 12fps with RR in half premium. Should that be ok?

PS is there a release history of Resolve? A friend of mine claims he runs 9.0.3 on his Mac Pro 1.1 in Lion 32 bit? Could he?

All Resolve V9 versions must run in 64 bit mode. Only V8 Resolve will run in 32 bit mode on Macs.

Yesterday I worked all day in Resolve using the rocket, and today suddenly everything is black again.
When I turn off the rocket in Resolve preferences, it shows the image again....

update:

different problem this time, it's also not working in Redcine.
Others have it too:
