Problem while rendering opticals/ black frame at 16 bit

PostWed Mar 27, 2013 12:07 am

Hi

We are facing a weird problem. We are exporting DPX for a film graded on Davinci Resolve. The codec is set at 16 bit and the resolution is set at 2K film. Wherever there are opticals (e.g. dissolve, fade in/out) or black frames; the generated DPX files are of 10 bit and therefore of a smaller size than the other DPX files which are getting rendered at 16 bit. This is seriously hampering DCP creation as UFO or Real Image are unable to import the entire DPX sequence in their timeline.

Any idea, how we can upscale opticals and black frames to 16 bit OR is it that we need to render the entire film at 10 bit instead of 16 bit?

Regards

That does sound like a strange issue.
I think you could change the bit depth in Photoshop, and automate the process with Bridge.
But if you are really gaining something in the way of image quality by using 16 bit (questionable), then wouldn't there be a noticeable jump when a dissolve happens.
You might be better off using 10 bit log DPX for the whole thing.

I get the exact same issue when rendering ProRes 4444 to DPX 16bit. On the Media page, on render, I see the image while it's being processed but I get black frames in the folders for images with cross dissolves.

Any clue on how to solve this while staying above 12bit?
