UltraStudio Mini Recorder - Crash During Update

PostSat May 11, 2013 8:51 pm

I just received my UltraStudio Mini Recorder.
Plugged it in.
Installed software.
I got a message telling me the device needed to be updated - I said yes to the update.
And partway through the update process, my new MacBook Retina crashed (first time ever BTW).

Now the UltraStudio doesn't show the white LED light "on" anymore.
My guess is that it got partway through the upgrade/update process and it's lobotomized.

Is there a "master reset" for it?

The EXACT same thing just happened to me. Brand new iMac, camera, mini recorder and all cables. Does anyone have a solution?

I've just gotten off the phone with a customer service representative. To make a long story short, I called the company (long distance!), and was told to install the software on ANOTHER computer and see if it works. You'll know if it is working properly when you access "System Preferences" --- "Blackmagic Design". From here, if your device is listed at the top of the dialogue box, and you can set preferences, the device is working properly. If it says "No Settings Required," as mine does, you have a faulty product. I'm hoping the exchange procedure is a speedy one. If anyone finds another suitable solution, PLEASE let me know!

This is what happened to me over the weekend. I need to call in but were you able to get a refund or exchange? I’ve got an event next week where we need 6 of these altogether. The 2 that I have are now dead apparently.

Would this still be true today because I'm having the same problem...and when I go to System Preferences>Black Magic Design>The page is all greyed out and on top of the page it says No Settings Required.

So my box is probably faulty if they haven't fix that, am I right?

Has anyone heard of a fix with this issue? I have installed the latest version Media Express. Connected to 2012 MacBook Pro. I have tested SDI from camera to this Mini Recorder, then Thunderbolt from Mini Recorder to Mac.

The white LED does not light up.

I also have the aforementioned results of my Blackmagic Desktop Video 10.3.5 preference page (in Mac System Pref) says "No Settings Required" at the top. Everything is greyed out.

Do I have a faulty unit?

BUMP

Any advice to see if I can know for sure if my device is bad?

I have tried:

-changing camera framerate and resolution (Canon XA25)
-plugged this unit into a different computer, still no sign of connection. The white LED does not come on. Preferences are greyed out on both machines.
-plugged device straight from camera SDI into the Mini Recorder, into the mac via Thunderbolt. No connection
-plugged this device into an output on my Blackmagic VideoHub (which is receiving and displaying the camera input just fine)

Hello Jake,

It could be that you have a faulty unit based on what you've described. You should contact your regions support office and see the best course of action they would recommend.

No. This is only something feasible within the support offices of BM.

Is it not possible for it to be sent back to BM for a firmware flash?

Owned the UltraStudio Mini Recorder for 12months this exact issue occurs. We contacted support and they said they won't do anything about it because it was purchased 12months ago... your software was what bricked the hardware? It was working fine before that.

So we can't return to BM to flash the firmware?

My device, got the same problem today when i was tryng to update de drivers for a new live. When i updating de drivers they asked me to update the device and my mac freezes when i restart, he does't turn on. So SAD! how one big company like BM does't have a away to re-flash one device like this.

As was mentioned in my last post, you can contact your regions support office and see what they can do to help with the recovery of this device but, this is only something that would be done in our facilities.

*****Solution*****

If anyone is still having the problem with the light not coming on, to the MiniRecorder, I tried this and it WORKED....

******Unplug the cords and blow into it, vigorously, like you used to blow into a Nintendo game that didn't work when you were a kid*****... I did it and plugged it back in and it worked!...Could just be a small piece of dust on a contact.... Seriously, try it....I only posted this because it was a lifesaver for me... God bless..

I have my unit for five years working perfectly. Until this last update has broken it. Is it a faulty unit? How to believe it? I have send it to the only support office in Brasil and they said there is no way to fix according to the central BM Office. Scheduled obsolescence?

Those days are here again! That was the exact fix for my problem (been trying to set up OBS for two days...). Everything working perfectly now; thank the Universe for forums!
