Intensity Pro 4K // 1080p25 HDMI output issue

PostWed May 08, 2019 1:02 pm

Hello everybody,

we operate the Intensity Pro 4K as a simple client playback monitor for AVID and Premiere Pro via HDMI. Blackmagic Desktop Video software used is the latest (11.1). At this special workplace we use a SONY BRAVIA KDL-32W655A screen.
Unfortunately we do not get a 1080p25 signal from the Intensity to the BRAVIA.

Depending on the timeline output signal these are our results:

1080p25 → doesn't work / message on screen „Unsupported Signal. Check your device output.“
1080p24 → works fine
1080p50 → works fine
1080p60 → works fine
1080i50 → works fine
1080i30 → works fine

So nearly any other signal works. What makes us crazy is that the BRAVIA according to its specifications can easily handle 1080p25. And indeed, a direct 1080p25 HDMI-signal from one of our cameras is also displayed correctly. Is the 1080p25 signal from the Intensity Pro 4K something special? It just doesn't work.

Of course we tested another screen (EIZO CG318 4K) and it worked perfectly with 1080p25.
But we want to avoid spending extra money if there is another way.

Has anyone ever had this problem and possibly a solution?
We often edit 1080p25 projects and then have to do it without the external monitor. There's a workaround to cut in a 1080i50 or 1080p50 sequence and change settings back to 1080p25 at the end, but that's not very useful.
Unfortunately, there's no way to set the output of the Intensity Pro 4K to PsF, that would be a good solution.

Thanks in advance

Matthias

BM seems to be unable to properly implement HDMI spec. Plenty reports about incompatibility between different hardware. Yours is next one :) Try inserting into chain some cheap (but not crazy cheap) HDMI splitter/repeater- it may help.

Other solution is to monitor as 1080 50p. Keep project as needed and set just monitoring to 50p. Resolve will repeat each frame twice and preview should be basically identical as native 25p.

PsF has nothing to do with HDMI. It's purely SDI related, so irrelevant here.
Try older drivers- BM latest drivers are almost always most buggy.

Thank you for your answer and suggestions, Andrew!
The idea of inserting a HDMI splitter in between is worth a try. I will post the result in a few days.

I have to admit I don't understand your alternative suggestion to set up the project completely natively to 25p, but change the monitoring to 50p.
Maybe that's possible in Resolve or FCX, but we only work with AVID and Premiere Pro.
As far as I know, the output monitoring framerate cannot be set differently from timeline settings. Neither in Premiere Pro nor in AVID.
The used IO card/box software may have this cross conversion feature - unfortunately the Intensity Pro 4K/BM Desktop Video Setup software doesn't.

But nevertheless, thanks for your help!

Yes, 50p monitoring is for Resolve. This can't be done in Premiere (probably AVID) as it works differently.
Try inserting splitter- it should work. This looks very decent but expensive:

Try with something simple.

So today, we tested a HDMI splitter between the IP4K and the BRAVIA with a 1080p25 signal.
It is a borrowed, very simple and cheap (€15) model (https://www.amazon.de/Mondpalast-HDMI-S ... B00FECY0CI).
Unfortunately, it wasn't successful. Still the message „Unsupported Signal. Check your device output.“ We may borrow a different splitter and test it again.

The Dr. HDMI looks very usable, but 100 euros are too much.
We will use the 1080i50 workaround or invest the money in another monitor.
Thank you nevertheless for your suggestion, Andrew!

Maybe someone else also had this problem and knows a solution for it.

You need splitter/repeater which does new negotiation for the format (one which has mentioned EDID feature).
