Hello there,

I'm working with a director that uses Hi8 a lot in his installation video material. He bought himself a BMD Intensity Shuttle (USB). He obviously ran into problems needing a TBC. I thought about what would happen if we ran the analogue through the Intensity Shuttle -> HDMI output to -> Ultradeck Mini Recorder HDMI input and then crash record into AVID / Premiere etc?

Is this something that might work?

And if not what is an Intensity Shuttle for? And is there an affordable solution to TBC.

Why not get a D-8 camera? As far as I remember, these can play Hi-8 and digitize it at the same time.

You can do the same thing with some of the Hi8/Digi8 VCR decks, which might be easier to find.

The issue with all analog video signals is that the synchronising part of the signal can become degraded. VHS suffers badly from this and needs a TBC to reconstruct a stable signal for capturing on a digital device. Back in the analog tape era, all pro decks had built in TBC’s.

I have had a lot of similar problems with digitizing old analogue VHS footage. Tried an Intensity Shuttle USB but due to the sync problems very rarely got it to work. Recently I came across the Blackmagic Intensity Pro 4K which turned out to be a very cost effective alternative with it's built in TBC. Although, of course, it does need to go in a PCIe slot on your PC's motherboard. Now have transferred loads of old tapes that have been sitting on the shelf for ages.

Digi-8 or D-8 is what I meant.

As noticed in many forums , tbc is the common problem for Blackmagic Intensity shuttle. Moreover, tbc is hard to find. Did somebody gained experience with designing/building an interface between s output and an Intensity shuttle?
It seems that some external dvd writers have a tbc on board...
