Fusion Dongle for Resolve

PostThu Apr 12, 2018 2:23 pm

I like the idea that Resolve becomes still more powerful and enjoy that Fusion users directly get access to it in its Studio version. However, will the Fusion dongle still work for the final Resolve Studio 15 release or just for the Betas ???

It will be supported for final release as well.

I bought a Fusion Studio dongle. Now that it works with Resolve, can I request a Resolve license activation code so I don't have it sticking out of my notebook? I also have a Resolve Studio dongle but acquired it via ebay and don't have packaging with a serial number so I don't think I can go that route.

AFAIK the dongle to serial number conversion program is only for Resolve dongle purchases before a certain date with proof of purchase.

Can any of you Peter Chamberlain or Rohit Gupta please clarify so I'm absolutely sure before I go online and actually buy it so I wont make a mistake.

If I buy Fusion 9 Studio NOW (today) for £229 (I'm in the UK), will this license allow me to use for both Fusion AND Resolve? This is what I understood from what Peter said in his linked post.

The Fusion dongle will work on the Resolve 15 Studio beta. It won't work for Resolve 14 so if you want to do some actual work it will probably not be the best choice to use a beta version.

I agree, beta is not the best choice for pro work, I only use it for personal videos so I don't mind.

I would like to get the studio version of davinci but I really don't know what's the best way to get it.

  • Do I just buy Resolve as it is available now (ver 15) which will give me 1 license (I think) and possibly a fully integrated Fusion in future versions.
  • Or do I get Fusion with dongle (if it is still possible) and this according to Peter Chamberlain's post https://forum.blackmagicdesign.com/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=64727 should give me additional free license to use after conversion to serial key version, (essentially I should have Resolve and Fusion both studio)

I'm just not sure now.

Resolve 15 supports and works with the Fusion Studio single license dongle and 15 beta until 15 is released.

Hi Peter,

So once Resolve Studio 15 is officially released, Fusion Studio dongles will no longer work for activation? Just looking for clarification as that directly contradicts Rohit’s statement above.

Cheers,

I can imagine that BMD is scratching their collective heads at this one. I must admit that I was totally sure a Fusion Studio dongle would activate both Fusion Studio 9 and Resolve Studio 15 (beta and released) but now I'm not sure - lol.

I can tell you that a Fusion Studio 9 dongle does activate Resolve Studio 15 beta 3... first hand experience.

Peter and Rohit - The question appears to be whether or not a Fusion Studio 9 dongle will activate the RELEASED version of Resolve Studio 15?

Thanks!

Let me rephrase.

As v15 is not yet released, the Fusion Studio standalone dongle will work with DaVinci Resolve 15 beta.

When v15 is released, the Fusion Studio standalone dongle will work with DaVinci Resolve 15.

I apologize if this has been answered already, but will a Fusion Studio Dongle still allow ProRes output in future versions of standalone Windows Fusion Studio?

And am I correct in assuming that Prores output will NOT be possible in Windows Resolve (with integrated Fusion) Studio 15?

I wouldn't count on it, but BM will hopefully clarify this.

I suppose the license agreement with Apple doesn't allow batch output, but I'm sure BM doesn't want to disable that in Resolve. So, not possible with integrated Fusion.

How long there will be standalone versions of Fusion may depend on the success of the integrated version.

OTOH, there are alternatives, now that even alpha output works well with DNxHD/HR in a MXF wrapper.
My disaster protection: export a .drp file to a physically separated storage regularly.

Fusion standalone and Resolve are different products and so the ProRes licensing conditions of each have not changed. Using a Fusion dongle to run Resolve provides Resolves feature set, not Fusion standalone.

Hello,

If I would purchase a Fusion Studio dongle now, with Fusion 16 beta, will it work with Fusion Studio 16 release and earlier?

Would this Fusion dongle also apply to DaVinci Resolve Studio 16 and earlier?

Regarding the update policy, is there any difference between dongle and activation-code?

Thank you!

The Fusion dongle has not changed. We changed the Resolve so it can read the Fusion dongle and it works for v16 beta and release when we release both.

To clarify, if I am not mistaken:

Fusion dongle = Fusion from some version X including 9 and 16 and likely future, Resolve 15, 16 and likely newer but not older than 15

Resolve dongle = Resolve from some version X including 15 and 16 and likely future, Fusion 16 and likely newer but not 9 or older

Resolve code = Resolve only, no Fusion unlock at this time

Way in the past I was forced to use some dongle and didn't like it, now that I have the choice, I'll purchase a dongle.

Thank you all for the valuable information!
