MXF Media Offline Davinci 15

PostTue Apr 17, 2018 10:06 am

Save to all,
I upgraded from resolve 14 to 15 and have a new problem.
I have a lot of material shot in MXF with a Sony FS5.
The problem is that the new Resolve 15 tells me that the media are offline. The curious fact is that I can hear the audio but I don't see the videos and this already in the media section that is before importing the material into the software.
Also only MXF material shot with Sony FS5 and Sony FS7 has this problem. Other videos shot with Canon or Gopro don't have this problem
Is this problem already happened to anyone?
Thanks

I have the same issue and it persists with Resolve 15b2.

Original footage is 4K 4:2:2 MOV files from JVC LS-300 camera. JVC and Resolve are not compatible for this implementation of the JVC codec so I convert all footage to MXF files. This is only the case with 4:2:2 files, no issues reading 4K 4:2:0 files.

Resolve 14 has no issues reading the converted MXF files. Resolve 15 displays "Media Offline" for all converted MXF files in my projects (old or new).

My computer specs are as follows:
  • Late 2014 iMac 27" w/ Retina 5K screen
  • Intel Core i7 at 4GHz
  • 32GB 1600 Mhz DDR3 memory
  • AMD Radeon R9 M290X 2GB integrated video
  • Running MacOS 10.13.2

The free version of Resolve 15 does not decode 10 bit MXF files. It will only decode 8 bit files.

You'll need Resolve Studio 15 to decode the 10 bit files.

Is there a reason why 14.2 Resolve can open 10bit MXF files but beta 15 has restricted it to Resolve Studio?

The source files from the JVC LS-300 (per my earlier post) are 8-bit files. In the conversion to MXF they are not being converted to 10-bit. Resolve 15b2 is still able to determine the clip attributes for the MXF files that are showing up as Media Offline and it indicates they are 8-bit video files.

So I don't think the issue is related to 8-bit vs 10-bit support in the free version of Resolve 15 as suggested by BMD.

Dwaine, is this true of all codecs or only MXF? Are you saying the free version can’t import or export over 8bit video? Is this noted in the feature list?

So then, is 15b3 Resolve capable to read FS5 mxf files?

Or is the Studio version required?

Re: MXF Media Offline Davinci 15

Hi all -- I have a related problem with MXF files showing as "Media Offline".

Camera: Canon C300 Mark II
Computer: iMac Pro, OSX 10.13.4, 128GB Ram, Radeon Pro 64
DaVinci: 15 Beta, (0b1, 0b2, 0b3) currently 0B.043

I shot a quick test, using several different framerates/bit rates, etc. -- and of specific note is that I used the camera's proxy feature to record versions to the SD card. FWIW:in the setup I tested the camera records on the CFast card using Canon XF-AVC Intra YUV 4:2:2 10 bit named something like 12345_CANON.MXF and also records a compressed version to the SD card, named 12345_CANON_P.MXF in Canon XF-AVC YUV 4:2:0 8 bit.

If I view the files in XF Utility or Premiere, everything works fine. If I view them in DaVinci 15b (all 3 betas), the proxy files are shown as red MEDIA OFFLINE, but the audio plays. The main clips work just fine.

Monkeying with the configuration prefs (GPU settings, CPU/Fusion settings, 10bit precision viewer, decode H264 w/hardware) doesn't make a difference. I've built brand new test databases without any luck.

Any thoughts?

thanks in advance

Re: MXF Media Offline Davinci 15

So where do we stand with regards to Resolve 15 and 8-bit MXF file compatibility? Is anyone able to use the free version of Resolve 15 beta to read MXF files?

I am happy to provide a reference clip to BMD to examine. I am not able to use v15 beta and am just wondering if BMD will address this before the production version of v15 comes out.

It's clear that a number of us using different cameras capturing 8-bit MXF files are having a common issue (Clips showing up as 'Media Offline' that still allow us to hear audio on playback).

BTW - when the Home screen initially appears showing the recent projects, the thumbnail videos of the projects that contain MXF video are visible and scrollable when the mouse if moved over the video thumbnails. Opening any project with MXF files still shows 'Media Offine' and upon returning to the Home screen, that project's thumbnail video now shows Media Offline where as previous to opening the project it's thumbnail video was visible and scrollable. This it true in all three of the Resolve 15 betas I have tried.

i've made the upgrade to the Studio version 15 and can now see all my FS5 mxf projects. I haven't opened them up individually, but I feel confident they are there and working. Thanks for your help solving this mxf problem.

Question: I work across platforms, several machines in each. The Studio activation lists 2 device activations associated with that Serial#. My question is - does that mean only 2 machines can be online simultaneously at any one point? For instance if I have a PC online with a project open, I can only have 1 other computer online running that same version of Studio serial#?

Or does it mean that only 2 machines may be activated with each Studio serial number, (period) ((end of story))?

Thanks much
Ron

Peter -- can you clarify?

You've stated that Sony FS5 and FS7 10 bit MXF files require the Studio version.

What about 8bit Canon MXF files (see my post above)? Is this an unresolvable issue, or is it on the list of bug fixes?

@Andy: What I see is a bit odd. Both files open in Resolve 15 Studio on Mac (I tested beta 3 and 4).

In Resolve 15 beta 4 free version on Mac, the 10 bit file opens, and the 8 bit file does not. This seems the opposite of what I would expect.

The 10 bit file is Canon XF-AVC Intra, and 4K DCI.

The 8 bit file is Canon XF-AVC, and is 2K DCI.

I'll let Peter and/or someone else on the dev team comment if this is expected behavior or not.

@Peter - Two post higher you referred to 10-bit MXF files requiring Resolve Studio. Nothing has been said from BMD in reference to 8-bit MXF support so that leaves one to assume 8-bit should work in the free version. It appears from Dwayne's last post that there may be an issue reading 8-bit.

The 8-bit question has been asked a number of times and BMD hasn't taken me up on my offer to send sample files. In the meantime I'm dead in the water as I'm not going to pay $299 for the Studio version when it comes with the BMD 4K Pocket Camera I ordered. My fallback is FCP which I'm getting reacquainted with.

Thanks,

This was shot at 4K 4:2:2 on a JVC-LS300 and then converted to MXF. Resolve indicates it's an 8-bit file.

Hello,

The best is to link to a native clip: no conversion.
At least we can not blame a conversion error. :)

Jean Claude -

The native .mov clips from the JVC-LS300 are not recognized by Resolve and there's likely not enough market demand for Blackmagic to add support for this camera.

My understanding is that the MXF conversion simply creates a wrapper that allows the file to be understood vs. being transcoded into another format (which I would rather not do). Resolve 14 had no issues reading the converted MXF files so nothing has really changed on my end.

It seems the error symptoms a few of us are seeing with 8-bit MXF files are similar... Media Offline however the clips are present and audible in the timeline. So I'm guessing is doesn't have to do with a conversion error.

Are you using the free version of Resolve v15 beta?

it seems the Studio version of v15 beta works based on what others have said but I can't tell from your screen shot whether you are using Studio or Free version.

I also noticed from your signature you are a Windows user. I'm using a Mac so perhaps there's a difference there as well.

@Al: I can confirm your file opens on Mac Sierra, in Resolve Studio 15b4, and is offline in Resolve 15b4.

I can also confirm the file opens in 14.3 non-Studio.

File is UHD, codec is XAVC and file is 8 bit.

As I mentioned above, someone from the dev team will need to comment if this is expected or not.

I'm hopeful MXF support is not entirely removed from the free version of Resolve 15. If it is, I'm sure those of us impacted would appreciate some explanation as to why that would be the case.

Peter previously said something to the effect of 'that's the way it is and it can't be changed' in reference to 10-bit. Whether that's the case for 8-bit or not I think BMD would be well served if they are open about why the decision was made regardless of whether it can be changed :)

Dwaine -

Any update on 8-bit MXF file support in Davinci Resolve 15 (free version, not Studio)? I downloaded beta 5 and the issue still exists.

Thanks,

I've also run into some issues with Resolve Studio 14 and the Free Resolve 15 Beta.

I was doing some tests on file formats and have noticed that some MPEG files in MXF format with video and audio are being recognised as audio only once brought into the Media Pool.

If you go to this page on the Grass Valley site where they have test bars and tone in different formats -
gvgdevelopers.com/concrete/products/k2/test_clips/

If you download these files as MXF

PAL SD MPEG IFrame
PAL SD MPEG LGOP
PAL SD MPEG D10
PAL 1080i MPEG IFrame

On my system they will only show up and play as audio clips in Resolve. They will play fine (video and audio) in VLC player on the same machine.

It would seem to be a wrapper issue rather than a codec issue as the PAL SD MPEG D10 clip will work fine when you download it as a .MOV file rather than a .MXF.

What brought my attention to it was one of my customers has experienced this with scanned film negatives from an adapted Steenbeck. The files are SD D10 format and also HD IFrame.

If the BMD devs could take a look at this and comment as to whether this is a bug or expected behaviour?

Cheers

There's still no love for 8-bit MXF file support as the 'Media Offline' problem remains in Resolve 15b6.

@Dwaine - any updates from the development team about this issue? I imagine we are getting close to Resolve 15 production release and it's starting to look like both 8-bit and 10-bit MXF files are not supported in the free version of Resolve.

It's not obvious to me why support for MXF files would disappear in a version upgrade, especially since Resolve Studio 15 does support MXF.

There are many codec variants used in the MXF/QT container and we do what we can to support them. However for some of these clips, I can confirm you are going to need the Studio version if using v15. I don't expect this will change anytime soon.

andybatt@gmail.com wrote:Hi all -- I have a related problem with MXF files showing as "Media Offline".

Did you ever get an answer to this question? I'm doing a job for someone and they shot with the Canon C300 and it is showing as media offline on my Windows machine with Davinci Resolve (not the studio version). I have the studio version at home but didn't bring the dongle with me so I will check it when I get back to the house.

So the non studio resolve can open and play back Canon C300 8-bit MXF OP1A files, but it will not open 10-bit MXF OP1A files. This is on the latest beta 15 build.

Note: Davinci does not work when trying to reconnect files using the Canon C300 file structure. We had the same problem in Davinci 14. I can literally navigate to the folder where the files are located and Davinci won't reconnect the files.

This is extremely frustrating when doing collaborative editing. If I send the exact folder structure I'm using to another editor, the files will not connect.
