Fairlight: why does only volume get a keyframe envelope?

PostThu Jul 19, 2018 6:53 pm

I've been digging deep into FL on 15b6 with some more complex test audio projects. I routinely use clip-based volume envelopes in the Edit and FL pages, i.e., I place key-frames, control the curves, etc. Immensely useful. Can we get the same kind of control for Pan or any other audio effect, even on a track level?

Track-based key-frame automation for Pan, etc. is indeed possible, I know, as shown through drop-down menus in the FL track headers. However, I don't want to record key-frame envelopes in real time, such as by riding a fader or moving the pan control around with a mouse while the playhead moves.

It would be terrific, even at a track level, to select Pan or any parameter from a VST effect from the drop-down menu, see a corresponding track envelope appear (like the default volume), then click on the envelope to precisely place key-frames and edit the curves exactly in the way that is now possible with volume only.

Would other editors find this useful, or am I alone? Is this a feature to be implemented (as if BMD doesn't have a long enough list ;) ) ?

Ugh. Really? Reynaud, that is a kludge of a workaround, but I sure appreciate your reply. Yes, I accept that as one way -- perhaps the best way -- to achieve what I described above.

I'd like precise envelopes: just a four point envelope would be great. [sarcasm] I don't want to spray a burst of key-frames indiscriminately by hand, then delete most of them, fix or do over if my hand slipped, and repeat the process, say, for the remaining 200 edits I have. [/sarcasm]

Another way that I achieved my end result was to duplicate the track in question, apply a PAN to the upper track, then control volume envelopes for the PANned and original tracks. This, of course, gives essentially the control I'm after, but it is just another workaround.

Thanks again, Reynaud. ;) I had stumbled upon something close to that (by fiddling around with automation controls), but your visual illustration certainly helps me to understand better how to use those controls. A tip of my hat to you...

+1

I still have to read the manual on Fairlight.
But considering the fact that we have these cool automation controls and other advanced stuff, it just feels wrong that we don't have the option to just add (e.g. panning) keyframes and smoothly interpolate them (on tracks and clips) like with the clip volume.

BMD still has to publish the manual on Fairlight.
