DR 16 Beta - A/B Highlight mode broken

PostThu Apr 18, 2019 3:58 am

I have been using the method of Highlight Difference for doing Noise Reduction in the Color Page of Davinci Resolve Studio 15.1.3

But since I upgraded to Davinci Resolve Studio 16 Beta, I have been unable to use the same method.

See the attached image for the results that I get when I enable A/B Highlight mode.

Anyone else with this same problem?

Now when I enable Highlight Difference and attempt to do Noise Reduction all I see is this washed out image and not able to see the difference between the Noise Reduction node and the previous node.

I have tried with various GPU options to ensure that this is not a GPU issue. But the problem remains.

I am having the same issue. The difference mode show only black and white information. Nothing in color, qualified or difference on grey screen. Is something broken or am I missing a setting somewhere?

I am unable to attach the project drp file, but I have attached the screenshot. If there is a way I can drop the drp exported project file someplace, let me know.

Export a drp.
put it on dropbox or similar.
place the dropbox link here with a space in the path so it doesnt look like a link.

I am not sure what was the setting, but I reset all the system preferences and user preferences and now I am able to see the highlight difference and other tools. Prior to that not only the highlight difference not working, but also other tools such as 3D HSL qualifier tool were not working either. Now all is fine after the preferences reset for Davinci followed by a restart.

The setting is in Davinci UI preferences, its called "Mattes display high contrast black and white"

I spent hours on google and then finally found the problem myself in the settings.

Thank you! That was clearly the setting that created the issue. It is good to know.

I seem to be having a similar but different problem with DR 16.1.2 on OSX 10.15.3: when I use TNR and use Highlight A/B mode the highlighted bits are shown relative to black, rather than middle gray. When I look at the Highlight A/B mode on the scopes, I see the R, G, and B parade lines getting thicker (from a reference level of zero) as I move the TNR luma/chroma sliders to the right. I can use the Offset setting to move the whole reference up to gray, but I am confused as to why the A/B mode is not showing middle gray as the starting point.

The highlight mode also doesn't work on Adjustment clips. You have to use Clips (or Compound Clips). WHY?!

This didn't work for me, I get a bright white screen in viewer... 16.2 build 55...

And this - My primary color grade is via an adjustment clip spanning the entire timeline. However even without the adjustment clip when I tried I get that white screen...

Note: I was not able to reproduce this problem after restarting my Mac.

Note 2: It does appear that when highlighting is enabled (not A/B mode) that TNR becomes disabled. I'm not sure I understand the logic of that.

I have just observed another oddity with trying to highlight TNR effects. I have a project that contains mostly R3D media. When I select a clip that uses the Project's default settings and then attempt to examine the TNR node in Highlight A/B mode, I get nothing but straight black. When I change the Decode Quality setting for the clip from Use Project to any other setting (from Full Res Premium to 1/16th Good), then I can see the pixels that differ due to TNR. When I switch back to Use Project, the decode setting is correctly restored to what my project is using, AND the TNR node shows the noise-reduced pixels according to that decoding setting. As I step through the clip, I can see the pixels dance. When I select another clip, then return to that one, the TNR mode again shows no pixel differences in the Highlight A/B mode until I change the decode options and change them back.

But more seriously than just the display using Highlight A/B mode, Resolve doesn't apply TNR to my clips unless I do this manual dance. Which only works for a single clip (not even all clips in single-clip mode). So it's really broken for me using R3D files.

It would be great if Resolve did not need this back-and-forth intervention to get TNR working with R3D media.

This issue randomly popped up across all my DR projects yesterday as well as new projects I created to test fixes.

I followed the advice on this forum.
I toggled the User > Color > "Mattes display..." on and off, restarting my computer each time without results.
I also (backed up and) completely reset User and System preferences without results.

Finally, I uninstalled and reinstalled Version 17.1.1 Build 9.
This fixed the problem on all newly created projects (even after bringing back in my old User and System preferences). However, the issue still remained on all older projects.

I created a new project with identical (project) settings to the problem projects and still saw no issue with the new projects.

Hope this helps someone troubleshooting.

Hi all,

I was experiencing this with version 18 and tried all the proposed solutions with no success. I spent a few hours troubleshooting however I could and the following is what worked for me:

1. Go to Project Settings
2. Navigate to General Options
3. Under Color section, UNCHECK Luminance mixer defaults to zero.

I am going crazy. I have tried all the above tips. The tip "[v]Matte Display High Contrast Black and White" helps, but only for a short time.
If I change the Temporal Noise settings, the contours disappear again and I have a smooth gray image. This is an annoying bug that seems to have been running through Resolve for many years.

Further solution trials:
* Reset all settings in Resolve to "factory" - no success.
* Uninstalled Resolve and reinstalled - no success.
* I also tried it on a MacBook Pro (Intel; 2015), here the same problem occurs!
So it's not my Windows configuration either.
Desperation.

I have now found a solution to the problem: If I turn off the "Render Cache", then the "Highlight- Difference" mode works correctly O.o.

How did I come up with this?
I saw sometime that when I move the playhead to the redlined (uncached) area of the timeline, suddenly the display was back. Then I turned off caching and cleared the cache. Voila - problem bypassed. Of course it is not solved yet, Blackmagic is needed.
