Editing in Resolve

PostTue May 14, 2019 5:53 pm

Hi there.
I’m a profesional video editor and postproduction manager on lots of reality shows for the last 15 years. I worked on every edit programs ( pinnacle, Avid, Edius, Premiere, Final cut pro).
Now on our production we have decided that we will get a chance to Resolve. And after we have delivered 6 epizodes of our show i need to write here my exerience.
1. The resolve is good program but with loots of bugs witch is for my opinion fixable.
2. Multicam editing - problem is that you can not change multicam mode directly from time line ( you need to every time when you need multicam ho eith mouse to source viewer an choose from menu multicam mode) this is frustrating
3. On version 15 ehen you add edit on timeline clip they select both clips (frustrating)
4. On same version match frame is not working very well ( when you click match frame they jump on rendom place on time line and do some strange thing, and you need click two/three time to ged match frame.
5. Copy and paste when you click copy and going to paste on timeline they pste on in or out point not the playhead
6. Volume (gain) when you decrease volume with gain (-3db) waveform is geting smaller and you do not see vaveform od song or dialog
7. Automatic Render is not working very well do not render every time and you need to delete all render before deliver to dnxHD or any pro codec
8. Slowmotion is twitch after expoting final product
9. Multicam - when you flat multicam you cannot go back and use multicam again like athet profesional software
10. When you go to next edit and you have selected clips they jump on every clips on time line - frustrating
11. BIG ISSUE
DELIVERY FOR PROTOOLS IS NOT WORKING!!!
THEY HAVE BIG BIG PROBLEMS - MISSING PARTS OF TONE - MUSIC IS 2 FRAMES ON DELEY AND SOME TIME PROTOOLS DOESNOT READ AAF.
This is very big problem for profesional user specialy last one for PROTOOLS
Tnx all i hope that some one from blackmagic is read this and try to fix this

Also, if a clip is left selected, and if you go to the previous or next cut, it jumps to every single clip until the next cut on the timeline, unless you deselect it first. Annoying!

Did you try AAF in 16b2?

Yes we try every aaf thats posible to export.
We lost 3/4 days just for testing aaf with our audio editor. The last solutions was export protools and every track on timeline one by one for backup. This is not profesional solution but we were in big deadline.

Sadly the export to pro tools is the weakest point of davinci resolve for professional editors. I keep writing this hoping that an easy solution would come soon for this software I decided to use as my main editing tool. On davinci 16 is announced a better way to go to pro tools but is not completly working yet, from the test I've done so far with my current project.
I've tried lots of round trips on davinci 15, and, in my experience, basically you can stick to the pro tools preset and than you have to work a lot in oder to have your session on pro tools looks like your timeline. If you don't use pro tools ultimate, you have to open the aaf in avid(move the files in the folder where avid recognize all your mxf audio files) and then export an aaf link, but lots of difficulties come along(shifts, missing tracks, no original audio files name but video names instead, no way to relink original audio in pro tools with field recording, etc..).
And if you need metadata from synchronised clips in davinci you are in big troubles, since they are lost when you need to export your timeline. In the past I had to reedit the movie in avid in order to send an aaf the is able to have metadata and can relink to the original audio files.
In my last movie I discover with my assistant that using avid and conformalizer there is a way to rebuild your timeline on pro tools using the timestamp(the only metadata useable from aaf), but it's super tricky and you need spend lots of time on this work, but to me was fundamental deliver this to the sound department.
So don't loose hope!

Match frame in Resolve has the shortcut "f" by default and works in both directions: If you have the timeline viewer active (the color of the header above the viewer shows you which one is active), pressing "f" will cause the source viewer to change to match the frame currently displayed in the timeline viewer. If the source viewer is active, pressing "f" will move the playhead in the timeline to find a match for the frame currently loaded into the source viewer.

Is that not what is happening for you?

It's also worth checking out the matched frame with offset and preview marks workflow that's described starting on page 96 in the free Advanced Editing in Davinci Resolve 15 book (available as a free PDF in the training section of the Davinci Resolve website).
