Hearing False Audio upon Play in MultiCam Clip Viewer

PostThu Jul 18, 2019 2:47 pm

I'm stringing out selects from four interview that were filmed 2 camera and sync'd into multicam clips.

After completing my selects on the first interview I moved to the second interview.

Whenever I hit "Play" in the Multicam Viewer, I first hear a few seconds of audio either from the previous interview or from the timeline below before I hear the correct audio from the Viewer. I'm not sure where exactly the false audio is coming from, but it's not the correct Viewer Audio when I hit "Play."

I'm not expecting to hear that false audio each time I hit "Play" to review the interview.

This happens every time I hit "Play" in the Multicam Viewer.

I made a quick screen capture so you can hear it. It's the audio from the timeline.

If I Play the timeline, I'll hear random audio from the timeline before I hear the audio in the Viewer.

I can't upload a quicktime or mp4 here so if you have another location you'd like me to send it to, let me know. It's smaller than 1MB.

I'm in the process of cutting my fourth multicam project in Studio Resolve 16 beta for Windows (b6 as of this writing) and haven't yet seen anything like this.

I never actually click the Play button for the Source Viewer, I only ever hit the spacebar or JKL shortcuts. Does that make a difference?

Hi Jim. Nope, no difference between hitting the actual "Play" button or using the keyboard.

If I play the timeline, then go listen to a clip in the MultiCam Viewer, first I'll hear some false audio from the timeline, then I'll hear the clip.

Thanks for the thought!

Have you loaded a multicam clip in the Source Viewer, or is the Source Viewer in Multicam mode playing the multicam clip in the timeline?

I'm double clicking the MultiCam clip into the Source Viewer.

OK. I'm thinking you might need a change to your workflow.

After you create the Multicams, right click on one and Create New Timeline Using Selected Clips...

Then use the dropdown arrow in the bottom left of the Source Viewer to change from Source to Multicam. You can then cut the angles of the multicam in the timeline.

I recommend three passes. One in real time for a rough cut, not stopping for mistakes. A second in Trim mode to make fine adjustments to the cuts. A third to remove any unwanted material.

Curious why I would need to create a new timeline from a multicam clip when you can already open it in a Timeline. Seems like an unnecessary step.

Now that I've sliced up the MutliCam clip for selects I can't create a new timeline. It only creates a New Timeline of the first clip

You create the new timeline from the Multicam in order to cut it up. That's just how Resolve works. Opening the Multicam in a timeline only gives you access to the original clips, it's not SOP to cut from there.

After the third part of my recommended work flow, you end up with a timeline full of selects. You can Copy/Paste from there using Stacked Timelines, or load that into the Source Monitor for adding to the Main timeline.

Hi Jim,

Thanks for the reply.

According to the Resolve reference manual, Multicam Clips work exactly the same as any other Clip.

So from what I'm reading in the manual, I'm doing this the way Blackmagic intended.

Create MultiCam Clips to sync the main audio with the cameras.

Double click the clip into a Viewer.

Mark In / Out and edit those clips into a Timeline.

In my case, I keep hearing false audio from the timeline before the MultiCam Clip plays. That seems like a it's a small bug in the system.

The added step of opening the MultiCam Clip in a Timeline and then using THAT timeline with all the angles doesn't seem necessary. Especially since I can Flatten the clip in the main timeline after I lock picture to get full control of the original clips.

Both ways obviously work, but working from the Viewer should work as I expect it to according to the reference manual. Thanks so much for your input!

I don't believe that's true. Multicam clips behave as normal clips in that you can do all the same things to Multicam clips that you can do to regular clips. But the way they're used is very different.

Then I guess I'll just deal with the false audio since I find working directly from the MutliCam clips faster than always Opening in a Timeline to pull from those clips. But thanks so much for you input Jim. It's been most helpful!
