PDF manual

PostTue Jul 30, 2019 8:15 pm

The Resolve 16 PDF manual seems to have something set incorrectly in its metadata.

When I open a PDF file, I can press the Fit Width button to have the document expand in width to fit the reading pane. When I do this with the R16 manual, it sizes to a fairly narrow column centered in the pane. The R15 manual does the same thing.

What's strange is that the other PDF's I've gotten from your site work as expected. In fact, in the decades I've been reading PDF's, this is the only document I remember acting this way. I thought I'd just edit it to correct whatever setting is incorrect but it appears to be protected, and I'm not an experienced PDF guy anyway.

Could you please have someone take a look at this? I know it seems a small thing in that I can just set the zoom to whatever I want, but when I do the page 'wiggles' when I drag it up and down with the hand cursor (which I do often).

I tried this on my iMac with Acrobat and reader and both work ok. Can you provide more info, screen shots or something to help repo this?

The manual should be included in the DaVinci Resolve folder in the Applications directory on macOS
(or the equivalent on Windows).

Beta 7 includes the version 16 manual (July 2019).

I'm on Windows with Resolve 16.0.0.050. The reference manual under the Help menu opens v16 July 2019. Looking forward to reading the Cut page section. Thanks BM!

I'm using PDF-XChange Editor Pro. I just downloaded their free viewer in which your manual displays properly. I'll report the bug to the devs.

Sorry for the red herring!

I'm getting the version 16 Manual in Studio 16b7 for Windows, opening in Acrobat Reader DC. Fit to Width is working properly.

Yeah, this appears to be a bug in my PDF editor. Strange that the manual is the only file that exposes the bug - must be subtle!

Turns out I spoke too soon - this does seem to be an error in the document. Here's the response I got from Tracker:

thanks for the email and report. When you set the View to "Continuous" mode, with "Fit Width" it will fit to the width of the widest page. Pages 2589 and 2590 are wider than the rest and those are what is defining the view for the entire document. Adobe starts off with "Fit Width" looking correct, until you scroll through to page 2589, when it then resizes the same as us and remains this way until I close and reopen the document.

I'm not having any trouble showing those pages in Acrobat Reader DC. They look to be the same width as all the others.

All pages working fine in Foxit Reader on Windows. No page width differences here.

I'm duplicating this with Acrobat Reader DC 2019.012.20035 which is the latest. The page width glitch happens on the Signal Flow diagram, which is pages 2760-61 on the new manual for version 16, and pages 2589-90 in the last manual version for software version 15. However I am able to get it to fit the narrower pages again by playing with the control buttons.

Pages 2760 & 2761 are in landscape format and scale correctly in Foxit Reader whether viewed as a page or full screen.

I am seeing a different page width on 2760 and 61. However, all pages (including those before and after) display correctly for me without any action on my part, both in Fit to Width and Zoom to Page Level.

Here's my latest correspondence with Tracker. It appears that they have a fix that does not require changing the document.

Tracker: It is my pleasure to help. I am not sure what the folks at DaVinci could do about this. There is nothing wrong with the document per se, it is just a different approach to rendering on the client end that causes the different behaviour.

I spoke to the Development Team leader about this and he agrees, we should change our approach to that which Adobe uses, ie, Continuous mode, with Fit Page Width, should fit the pages being viewed, not one that is off screen. To that end I have raised a Support Request Ticket to track the progress of this issue. While internal only, should you refer to RT#4864: Continuous Mode Fit Width to reflect the current page in correspondence with us, any support staff member will be able to get you a status update.

Me: I’m not sure what you meant about the docs authors not being able to fix the issue. It appears they’ve just got the page width set wrong for a couple of pages. Is it more than that?

Tracker: Well that is one way to look at the issue. The other is that those two pages are intended to be larger so as to fit all the content, in which case the view mode is not their issue/problem, but ours. I suspect they intended to have different pages sizes in their document, it is not uncommon.

That was Tracker's take as well. I didn't understand that in my initial discussion with them which is why I asked the question and posted their response here.
