strip silence

PostTue May 10, 2022 10:36 am

Digital Audio Workstations like Studio ONE and Reaper allow you to prune areas of an audio file.

Youtubers would massively benefit from editing dialog where they can run a function on a clip and Resolve puts a cut point where silence begins and ends. DAWs allow you to specify tolerances, lead-in and lead-out time etc.

I think a function implemented in a similar way to Automatic Scene Detection would be great - where instead of detecting scene changes, it uses the audio to detect silence.

It needs to function in such a way that all linked clips are affected (the equivalent of grouping in DAWs).

Here is an example of someone editing their video in Reaper so that they can get these micro-edits done automatically. It would be killer if davinci resolve could achieve the same end goal.

Here is an example of an external tool (time bolt) which does nothing but this function and he charges a pretty penny for it. This promo establishes the usage-case and is a proof of demand to some extent.

Let's have a return to the glory days, when press releases for new versions included text like "...with over 300 new features and improvements that professional editors and colorists have asked for."

Time bolt is ok, but the lack of support for 23.976 footage really gums up the works when working with multiple cameras at 23.976 as it doesn't support them all!

Hey DaVInci, we REALLY need this feature! What a luxury to have it supported natively across multiple cameras and audio files. Not really a "big ask"

It's kind of embarrassing that we have to go out of Resolve to get things done quicker.

Strip Silence is a HUGE feature in Pro Tools for dialogue editors, and it specifically has a selectable threshold (plus handles) you can set to make sure it never cuts off any words or breaths. Very, very useful. I'd love to see this made part of Fairlight.

It's in Avid media composer too.

In the meantime you could use ReCut, cheaper than timebolt, no subscription and a lifetime one off license.

This plus automatic "Remix" would make good marketing for DR for content creators.

Good gracious, is it just me or does Blackmagic need to get with the time. Using forum technology circa 1999.
Reminds me of the old XboxLive forums.

Anyway, I can't believe this isn't a STANDARD feature in all NLEs. It seems like almost a no brainer, the MOST annoying part of editing is scrubbing through all the dead air. You would think there would be a button that would mark all of the dead air at least, that way if you have some dead air on purpose like pausing for effect or zooming in on something you can keep it. But not having a way to just mark it all and DELETE it all seems mind blowing to me in 2023 particularly with all the AI apps that are around.
And TimeBolt is a complete waste. It is clearly a hack job, particularly for multicam footage (My main use case). The user experience is just atrocious and it just isn't a product I am proud to spend money on.
I may just take some time to put together a cloud app or something that just takes your recorded footage, and just goes through it all, GETS RID OF THE FREAKIN DEAD AIR, Auto Jump cuts almost randomly, but hopefully I can get some computer vision AI in there to help out with that, and also use LLM to find where you make mistakes (repeated yourself multiple times ... is biased to the last time you repeat yourself) so you can just upload your footage, and get a clean base timeline, that you can then add graphics and text to help with engagement.
Write now it is just a lot of wasted time and effort on menial tasks.
But allas, with a full time job and a failing youtube channel, who has the time.

If anyone is interested, there is a pretty good (and lightweight) python tool for that :
https://github.com/WyattBlue/auto-editor

Auto-Editor is a command line application for automatically editing video and audio by analyzing a variety of methods, most notably audio loudness.

Auto-Editor can also export to:

DaVinci Resolve with --export resolve
Final Cut Pro with --export final-cut-pro
ShotCut with --export shotcut
Individual media clips with --export clip-sequence

I used it in the past and it was pretty good, I'm installing it this update now.

Of course it would be nice to have something similar integrated to resolve, but this tool could be useful for some people right now :)
