Better Usage

PostThu Jan 05, 2023 4:35 pm

I think many would find it useful if we had a couple of options with regard to Usage, both in List view Columns and in the right-click menu.

Usage (Timeline)
Usage (Project)

The first would reflect the currently active timeline, of course.

"Usage" is crucial for media management .... but has flaws
Every media drag&drop from the media pool in the color & Fusion node graph are not "usage" aware

+1 for improving the "usage".

also, we have to decide what to do with timelines that are "hidden": should the count be in or not?

Alternatively, have it both ways and report something like this:

Hidden should mean hidden from everything. If you want to see anything in a Hidden timeline, unhide it.

If hidden should mean hidden from everything, how can you see the thing you hid?

Also, it's not hidden, it's disabled.

Version 18.5 is officially released. Not all Feature Requests can be done at once, and this one didn't make the cut.

The released version of Resolve 18 still shows only usage of a media pool clip in the currently open timeline. There's no way to find which timelines use a clip in the media pool! This may not be a bug, but it's a feature of Premiere that's sorely missed in Resolve, so +1.

Even Public Beta 19 still doesn't solve this.

I've found this frustrating as well, as I work with projects that can contain upwards of 300 timelines, and you sometimes really want to know where a certain clip has been used.

Fed up with waiting, I've written a very clumsy script that can be called from the console. It takes a few seconds to execute but it will list all sequences of the current project in which a particular clip is used.

I'm sure this can be streamlined / expanded in various ways, but my scripting skills are extremely limited.
Especially, one could extend it to include all projects in the database, compound clips etc.
Just don't have time to do it. Any takers?

In any case I still wish something like this would be implemented in the media pool.

For those who haven't used scripting, here's how it works.

Call up the console (Menu Workspace >> Console)
Click on the button for Python 3 ("Py3")
Paste the code below at the prompt and hit enter. (You only need to paste the code once per session)
Call the script by typing find_tl("clipname") and pressing enter.

This lists all the timelines' names that contain the clip, either in a video or audio track.
The clipname needs to be the exact name the clip has in the bin.

One caveat, I do not know if this works without Python 3 installed on the system. (It is on mine, Mac OS)

You're welcome.

Code: Select all
import sys

def find_clip_recursive(folder, clip_name):
    # Get all clips in the current folder
    clips = folder.GetClips()

Adding a media from MediaPool to Fusion NodeGraph has an immediate update for Usage column!

I have DR 19.1 and it seems the USAGE option is only available if a clip is in use somewhere. Is that correct? Is that expected behaviour? On the edit page, I right-click on a clip or asset in any bin and if it is in use, it will get the USAGE option in the right-click menu. If not, the option does not show up.

So if this is by design, can I assume if the clip does not have the USAGE menu option, it is not in use anywhere? Or is it just not in use in the currently loaded timeline(s)?

I wish I could just find where and if any asset is used. This USAGE seems very complicated to use.

I don't think that's correct, Aecio. Here's what I saw.

First, you do need to go to the Media Pool menu to Update Usage For Entire Project...

But this new feature currently has very limited usability and does not actually answer this Feature Request. For starters, when you're in Thumbnail View, the Usage option in right click only shows up (as you observed) if that clip is used in the currently active timeline.

If the clip is used in another timeline, you won't get the Usage option in the right click menu, so that being missing is not a clear indication that the clip isnt used anywhere.

Additionally, when in List View we do see the Usage column populated regardless of which timeline is active, so this can be a way to see which clips are used somewhere. But the failing is that we get no indication of where it is used.

So I consider this Request still active. We don't yet have what we need.

Need to be able to locate where any clip in the media pool is used. As a project progresses many timelines are created and saved in case you need something from an earlier stage. Just because a clip isn’t used in the current timeline doesn’t mean it isn’t used in another timeline you may need to go back to in the future. Usage needs to be very robust.

Would be nice to have, but it's a rare use case for me at the moment

When I needed it today, this workaround did the trick in just a few clicks:

- Create a temporary timeline
- Drag all other timelines of interest into it
- Go to Media page, open the bin with the relevant clips
- Click Update Usage For Entire Project... in the Media Pool menu

The Usage column should update with the correct count, and right clicking the clip and the Usage menu should have all instances of clip use in all timelines that were added to the temporary timeline

This is far from a fringe feature - it's strictly essential in a video editor.

The strange thing about it is, there already seems to be a framework for it – the usage tab in the dropdown right click menu for a clip.

I don't understand why the menu would only open a timeline is actively open.

Please Black Magic, can we turn that 0 into a 1 in a code or vice versa – it's a pretty big deal in the long run.

I need to use this all the time. I used to use it constantly in After Effects and Premiere.

Yes please , it's just surrealistic that such obvious options like this one (and MANY others) are not included as bascis in this editing software. i'm manipulating HOURS of rushes for a documentary and everyday I think the media pool looks like a 1998 UI. It needs to be more flexible.

Why do they add tons of (from my point of view of EDITOR) useless features in every release...? And not the BASICS of BASCIS after V20?

Agree this is a useful feature but it may also be hard to make it work. Not clear I can imagine this one being non trivial to fix.
