Groups management on Color Page

PostTue Oct 22, 2024 12:38 pm

For grading a daily TV Series it would be a huge benefit, if user created groups could be managed and moved in folders. Groups are superior to other techniques like adjustment clips or shared nodes, because they are fast to create and easy to handle. Only minor is the endless menue you get when using a lot of them in a project with 40 Episodes of a TV Series, even if one movie only contains 5 Groups.

Have you used Lightbox?

Thanks for pointing me to the lightbox. Unfortunately the problem of scrolling through an endless list of groups in non alphabetic order still exists when adding clips. (I am aware that I can select grouped clips and then some none grouped clips and then go to "add to current group")
I still wish there would be a better group management.

There is just about any way you would ever want to that you can group stuff, from smart filters that are custom made to colors to graded and non graded to many other ways. And if you need alphabetical order for some reason that is different than how they were edited, you can do that freely in the media pool, where you have option to sort them and view them in this way. There has to be a way among all those options to find one that suits your needs. There has to be.

We are speaking of different things. Yes, there are endless ways so sort and show clips, that's great. But what I am looking for is to filter what's shown in the goup menue, not the clips. If you're dealing with a project that contains 500 Groups it would be nice to filter the menue itself. It's not about showing or hiding clips.
Something like: in the group menue show only groups that contain "2007" and hide everything else. In series production that would be helpful.

When you say "group," do you mean Pre-Clip Groups and Post-Clip Groups, or do you mean something else?

If you truly have 500 groups, I think you need to come up with a more rational way to work. That will not fly with episodic work. I have used as many as 20 or 30 groups for some projects, but usually those grades are specific look for certain sequences. For the rest of it, I used a Fixed Node Structure, which is as simple or as complex as the situation demands.

There have been requests in the past to alphabetize the drop-down Group menu with clips, but it hasn't happened yet. If I encounter a really interesting group grade, I'll save it as a PowerGrade to a specific bin, just so I can recall and use it on other projects in the future. So in that respect, the Pre/Post Group Grades are transportable.

+1 for better group management, in general. The current UX makes me avoid using them.

+1 here as well.

Would love a way to manage the list of Groups, by filtering, sorting, renaming or even just deleting the ones that aren't used in a particular project.

Groups are a great feature and so useful, just would be much tidier to manage the list of groups as a project file scales up.

+1 to alphabetize the drop-down Group menu with clips.

I'm on a documentary show that was provided to me as a flattened Prores file, so I'm using groups for the 25+ interviews (and their wide/closeup cameras), with IDT on the pre-clip, shot-level adjustments on the clip level, and look/ODT on post-clip . With nearly 50 groups it gets a bit hard to find and select the right group.
